Job Summary:
Functions under the direction of the Executive Director Medical Imaging Operations.
The MRI Clinical Specialist will function as the Wellstar Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (MRSO).
The MRI Clinical Specialist supervises the updating and managing of all MRI protocols as received from the radiologist.
The MRI Clinical Specialist has the knowledge and ability to properly and safely obtain a quality diagnostic study with the ability to troubleshoot quality issues.
The MRI Clinical Specialist will work with the physicians to implement new protocols and procedures.
The MRI Clinical Specialist will at a system level direct training.
The MRI Clinical Specialist will be responsible for maintaining current policies compliant with Joint Commission and ACR.
The MRI Clinical Specialist will be the point person for ACR accreditation.
The MRI Clinical Specialist will create and review MRI policies on a regular basis.
The MRI Clinical Specialist will be the MRI liaison for the MRI department to referring physicians.
The MRI Clinical Specialist will when needed teach technologists.
The MRI Clinical Specialist will review images and communicate to technologists how to correct problems.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Team Management / Employee Engagement
- Must be flexible with work hours to meet departments need.
- Knows the existing lines of communication and authority, handles communications properly and is dependable, cooperative and emotionally stable.
- Works with Department leaders to identify exams that should be included on initial and annual competencies.
- Assists with interviews and orientation of new employees if requested.
- Maintains good working relationships with managers, staff, physicians and their staff.
- Communicates area needs and recommendations to appropriate Managers and/or Director.
- Communicates concerns to appropriate personnel.
- Assist staff with job responsibility and job function concerns
- Provides training for staff as needed
- Works with referring physicians
- Works with staff and physicians to determine educational needs and assigns learning modules as needed
- Help with evaluating equipment
- Helps with evaluation of contrast agents and cost
- Able to identify areas of improvement and implement PI projects
- Notifies staff of policy and procedure changes
- Provides facility leadership with concrete data on individual technologist image quality.
- Contributes to the development of staff by observing work, answering questions, explaining procedures, demonstrating techniques, etc.
- Utilizes positive and constructive criticism to improve MRI staff performance. Displaying a positive attitude at all times. Customer Service / Quality Patient Safety
- High level supervision of staff to ensure that quality is maintained for MRI
- Assists with maintenance of the department records, JCAHO standards, State and Federal regulations and Performance Improvement.
- Ensures compliance with all Joint Commission Standards, Local, State and Federal Rules and Regulations.
- Maintains standard of care as outlined in the policies and procedures.
- Understands Scope of Service for Medical Imaging
- Assist in other Medical Imaging areas and as needed in other departments in the system
- Able to work in a PACs environment and electronic medical record
- Prepares and may administer contrast. Understands preparation/administration of doses type of contrasts according to patient's weight, physician order and lab work (GFR).
- Ability to educate MRI technologists on how to adjust protocols due to patient body habitus, disease state, etc. so that image quality is maintained.
- Coaches MRI technologists on when to report problems regarding malfunctioning equipment to supervisor or service provider, so that problems can be addressed in a timely manner.
- Instructs MRI techs on how to properly clean, disinfect and maintain equipment in accordance with infection control policies and OEM recommended guidelines.
- High level supervision of MRI staff to ensure that quality is maintained for MRI scans.
- Works with facility MRI staff leadership to ensure that staff accurately prepare and submit required documentation in accordance with PP's. Ensures that MRI staff submit studies of highest quality and that all studies have proper identification, labeling and documentation.
- Works with MRI staff to ensure that all procedures are captured and charged daily, performing clinical audits as needed. Assists with resolving outstanding issues.

Required Minimum Education:

  • Bachelors Health Science-Preferred or Trade School Diploma/Degree Radiologic Technology-Preferred or High School Diploma General


Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):
All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.

  • ARRT Magnetic Resonance Imagin-Preferred or Certified MRI Technologist
  • Basic Life Support or BLS - Instructor

Additional License(s) and Certification(s):
Magnetic Resonance Safety Officer (MRSO) Upon Hire Required

Required Minimum Experience:
Minimum 3 years Minimum of 3 years in a supervisory position Required

Required Minimum Skills:
The individual must be able to communicate and understand verbal and written English language and display a positive attitude (see WellStars Standards of Gold and Values).
Must have an extensive knowledge of CT physics, procedures, and patient care.
Must be able to teach.
