The Lead Counsel 1 is an intermediate level position responsible for providing legal counsel and support to aligned countries/geographies of responsibility. The overall objective of this role is to provide legal support, advice, and guidance across a broad range of practice areas, with respect to the local laws and regulations of the country or countries for which the Country General Counsel Group Manager is responsible.

This role is responsible for providing guidance, support, and legal advice on Citi's businesses and functions in COUNTRY/GEOGRAPHY. This role requires thorough understanding of the business needs and expectations, combined with a solid conceptual / practical grounding in the laws and regulations of the geographies in which we operate. Provides input into strategic decisions, exercising sound legal judgement to develop proactive, risk-appropriate, and commercially practical business-oriented solutions.

Primary coverage will be for:

  • Treasury and Trade Solutions (TTS) – Advice the corporate and commercial bank division of Citibank (China) Co., Ltd (“CCCL”) with the following responsibilities:
  • review and advise on all matters relating to cash management, liquidity management and trade-finance products (together, the “TTS Business”) for CCCL, and where required, with the guidance of TTS senior counsel;
  • review and prepare legal documentation (facility letters, updating product terms & conditions) for matters related to the TTS Business;
  • advise TTS when there are changes in laws & regulations that impact the TTS business; and
  • assist in litigation management.

  • Corporate Legal office of Citi China – Provide ancillary support for the Citi China franchise (including its shared service centre) focusing on governance matters data privacy, litigation reporting & corporate projects/control assessments, policies implementation, development of legal guidance notes etc..

KEY REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor degree or above (mandatorily in Law for bachelor degree) from the premier universities
  • Fluency in Mandarin and English are essential (written & spoken)
  • Thorough understanding of the Chinese legal environment and regulations
  • Independent, energetic and customer-focused individual with good team spirit and excellent interpersonal skills & adaptable
  • Willing to work under pressure and enjoys having a diverse coverage and the challenge of providing practical & commercial legal solutions
  • Previous legal experience with banking and financial services (ideally, at least 2 to 3 years working experience in law firm) will be advantageous for this position
  • Experience in an international or reputable domestic law firm is a plus
  • Qualified lawyers [Mandatory] with experience in the banking sector and strong credentials (especially command of English) may also be considered and are encouraged to apply
