Navigators Re (“NavRe”) is a division of The Hartford writing Property, Casualty and Specialty assumed treaty reinsurance with the following characteristics:

  • Founded in 2012;

  • 2024 estimated annual GWP of $850 million;

  • 70+ colleagues managing underwriting, distribution, actuarial, finance, contract, claims, information technology and operations;

  • A global footprint with offices in Stamford, CT, Morristown, NJ, Coral Gables, FL, London and Zurich;

  • Many of the markets in which Nav Re currently competes are exhibiting favorable trading conditions; 

Reporting to the Head of Operations, Actuarial, & Data for NavRe, the AVP & Actuary, Reinsurance is responsible for pricing and portfolio management for NavRe business and the performance and development of the Actuarial team.  The unit currently consists of 4 direct reports.  Lines of business include Professional Liability, Casualty, LatAm P&C, LatAm Group Life & Disability, US and International Property, Agriculture, Global Credit and Surety.   The Actuary will need to establish strong relationships with the global teams and business partners, while building credibility across multiple layers of leadership. The candidate will need to be comfortable both within and outside of the traditional actuarial discipline to broaden his or her sphere of influence. It is important to be able to prioritize work for maximum impact while keeping the team motivated and engaged.

The position will preferably report to the Stamford, CT office on an in-office or hybrid basis; we are open to alternate arrangements based on the strength, fit, and demonstrated historical experience and success of the candidate.  

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee pricing for new and renewal business across all global lines including:

    • Peer review and provide guidance to team members on treaty-level pricing analyses;

    • Work with underwriters to develop timely and accurate pricing recommendations;

    • Properly document pricing decisions, including the evaluation of risk transfer;

  • Provide timely and accurate views of profitability, including insights into line of business performance by producing profitability studies, regular parameter updates, and supporting accumulation management.

  • Develop and maintain best in class pricing and modeling tools for the business.

  • Provide support and input into the quarterly reserve cycle and annual planning.

  • Work with ERM and capital attribution team to set volatility parameters used in ROE calculations

  • Build an understanding of our competitors and the market in general. Look inside as well as outside to arrive at the most informed answers and decisions.

  • Develop and mentor the actuarial team.

  • Ensure that we reduce complexity to produce high quality work with an eye towards accuracy.

Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of demonstrated experience in reinsurance or complex pricing, modeling, or related actuarial function.

  • ACAS or FCAS preferred. 

  • Experience with managing teams and being able to attract and retain talent from within and external to the organization.

  • Team player with strong collaboration skills and ability to build trusting, effective matrixed partnerships.

  • Strong technical, analytical and data skills; Excel required and experience with VBA, R and/or Python preferred.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey technical results within the management team and other key stakeholders.

  • Ability to prioritize work efforts and operating plans to achieve business goals and objectives.

  • Self-motivation, creativity, time-management, project-management, and customer-management skills will be beneficial in this role. 

  • Process improvement mindset and skilled at developing efficiencies.

  • With our significant presence in LatAm with our Miami based team, Spanish fluency would be a plus.

  • Undergraduate degree in mathematics, actuarial science or related field of study required.

  • Legally qualified to work in the U.S.

Location:

This role will have a Hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in an office in Stamford, CT; New York, NY; Hartford, CT; or Chicago, IL three days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$181,840 - $272,760
