GoFundMe is the world's most powerful community for good, dedicated to helping people help each other. By uniting individuals and nonprofits in one place, GoFundMe makes it easy and safe for people to ask for help and support causes, for themselves and each other. Together, our community has raised more than $40 billion since 2010.

Join us! GoFundMe is searching for a Senior Staff Software Engineer for Identity Platform to serve as the technical leader driving the architecture, scalability, and reliability of our identity platform, the foundational layer that every product team, enterprise customer, and internal service builds on. Your work will directly shape how millions of people trust and interact with GoFundMe, and how engineering teams across the company build identity-dependent features with confidence.

As a key technical leader, you will have the opportunity to define how consumer and enterprise identity converge into a unified, secure platform, driving impact for the company, the engineering organization, and the people we serve. Join us if you are excited to own a meaningful systems problem end-to-end while making a direct impact on trust, personalization, and the causes that matter most.

This is a hybrid role that requires 3 days per week at the office, and we are therefore only able to consider candidates who are located or willing to relocate to San Francisco, CA.

The Role

  • Serve as the technical lead for GoFundMe's identity platform, defining the architecture, integration boundaries, and trust model that span consumer and enterprise contexts.
  • Take ownership of the entire identity platform lifecycle: architectural design, development, deployment, documentation, and maintenance of the systems that underpin authentication, authorization, and session management across GoFundMe.
  • Design and scale the systems that make enterprise identity onboarding a repeatable, self-serviceable platform capability rather than a bespoke integration effort.
  • Own the consumer identity platform that delivers account continuity, confidence scoring, and progressive trust across the full user lifecycle.
  • Build and maintain platform primitives that are secure by default and aligned with business outcomes across trust, safety, and personalization.
  • Own the technical roadmap for the identity platform, prioritizing initiatives based on user needs, enterprise requirements, and technical feasibility to deliver high-value solutions.
  • Set integration standards and platform primitives that make it easy for engineering teams across GoFundMe to consume identity correctly and safely, without requiring those teams to take on auth complexity themselves.
  • Provide mentorship to engineers, advocate for improvements to the platform, and provide technical leadership to others within and beyond your team.
  • Contribute significantly to system reliability and operational excellence by participating in on-call rotations and leading the troubleshooting and resolution of identity-related incidents.

You

  • You are a seasoned software engineer with a track record of building and shipping platforms that other teams depend on within the IAM domain.
  • You have 8+ years of relevant industry experience with significant time spent at senior, staff, or principal levels.
  • You have deep, hands-on experience with identity protocols and standards including OAuth 2.x, OIDC, SAML, and SCIM, and you can make principled build-vs-integrate decisions across vendor and in-house identity systems.
  • You can navigate through ambiguity in a hybrid identity environment and assist the team with scoping, discovery, and defining clear architectural paths forward.
  • You have experience architecting identity systems using well-accepted design patterns (federation standards, session and token management, trust boundaries) and you anticipate future use cases to minimize the cost of future change.
  • You are skilled at leading projects from conception to completion, balancing technical trade-offs and business needs while communicating progress and challenges to stakeholders and keeping teams aligned.
  • You understand both enterprise identity challenges (SSO, federation, provisioning, multi-tenant trust) and consumer identity challenges (account continuity, progressive trust, friction tradeoffs) and can work effectively across both.
  • You have a security-first instinct. You threat-model as you design, understand credential risk and account takeover patterns, and build platforms where the secure path is the path of least resistance.
  • You have strong experience with relational database design and data modeling for identity systems, including schema evolution strategies for large-scale, high-availability environments.
  • You have strong experience diagnosing and preventing reliability and performance issues in identity systems, with expertise in monitoring, observability, and incident response.

Preferred

  • Experience with identity platforms such as Okta, Descope, Auth0, Ping, or comparable providers.
  • Familiarity with identity resolution concepts including visitor stitching, account linking, anonymous-to-authenticated merging, and confidence-weighted models.
  • Background in environments that span both enterprise and consumer identity contexts (fintech, SaaS, or identity-forward companies).
  • Experience working in environments where compliance, auditability, and data residency are important considerations (e.g., SOC 2, GDPR, CCPA).
  • Practical experience with cloud infrastructure (AWS, GCP, or Azure) in the context of deploying and operating identity services at scale.
