Assistant Director, Communications
The Assistant Director, Communications role is a trusted communications advisor for the head of Middle & Large Business. Reporting directly to the AVP of Marketing & Communications for Middle & Large Business, this role identifies communication opportunities across audiences and bridges strategic expertise with tactical execution to build communication plans and execute on communications supporting business objectives, engaging our key stakeholders, and telling our story. While the primary focus of the role is internal communications to our employees, this role also partners on certain external messaging for our senior leaders in support of business initiatives to help us drive profitable growth with our distribution partners.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the development and execution of communication strategies for an executive level leader inclusive of relevant messaging and tactics that achieve business goals. Advise leader and SLT members as needed and influence business decisions to support our objectives.
- Serve as a key point of contact for communication activities related to Middle & Large Business or that span across our organizations as needed to support our executive leaders.
- Collaborate with colleagues across the organization to ensure an integrated communication approach; partner with enterprise communications team to understand enterprise approach and objectives and ensure business alignment.
- Develop, draft and manage communication campaigns and their components, including announcements, talking points, presentations, emails, articles, vlogs/blogs and other content as needed. Provide coaching and feedback on presentation delivery as needed.
- Evaluate metrics where possible and make recommendations.
- Oversee the Middle & Large Business iConnect presence, manage the process for posting announcements and coordinating content for salesConnection, and provide guidance to communications submitters where necessary.
- Manage content for internal leadership meetings and town halls, providing communications counsel and presentation support.
- Create video content for internal use when it aligns with our communication strategies.
- Partner with Middle & Large, Global Specialty and Small Business communications leads to recommend and develop communications that align to our Business Insurance strategy.
- Partner with the Middle & Large Business strategy team and other Middle & Large leadership to provide communications guidance and support on large-scale projects/change management when necessary.
- Assist in development and implementation of crisis communications when necessary.
Qualifications:
- 7+ years corporate internal communications, media relations, or similar
- Critical thinker and problem solver who has demonstrated ability to provide strategic communications and counsel to executive management and to positively influence decisions and redirect stakeholders while maintaining strong partnerships
- Proven experience advising business partners at all levels of the organization
- Organized and detail-oriented, with a proven ability to manage multiple complex communication initiatives simultaneously while maintaining clarity, consistency, and timely execution.
- Demonstrated ability to understand complex business content and objectives and translate them into a communications strategy; experience designing, implementing, and executing detailed, large-scale plans
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate trusted partnerships with senior leaders as well as work with sensitive information in a large corporate setting
- Navigate a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment – on both a proactive and reactive basis
- Knowledge of internal communications and intranet best practices; desire to stay current on emerging communications channels and technologies
- Strong business acumen
- Knowledge of and passion for the P&C industry, including products and evolving trends.
- Superb writer, editor, proofreader and presenter; strong ability to craft a story/narrative
- Excellent presentation/PowerPoint development skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) and SharePoint; Knowledge of Camtasia video software a plus
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field
Compensation
The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford’s total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:
$96,000 - $144,000
