Are you an experienced Environmental and Regulatory professional and committed to the laws, regulations and policies concerning environmental issues? In this fast-paced role, you will be an integral member of our Environmental and Regulatory area, and will support the environmental compliance and reporting needs of our Oil Sands Upgrading Operations.

Minimum Requirements:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering or Science, or Environmental Technology diploma
  • A professional biologist or working towards that designation is preferred
  • Five years of relevant industry environmental experience
  • Strong experience and knowledge of oil sands and industrial operations
  • Experience in an environmental program area that involves operations and experience providing guidance on a day-to-day basis to management and/or operations personnel
  • The ability to anticipate potential problems and check for out-of-the-ordinary conditions, as well as having a strong sense of accountability
  • The ability to remain organized and able to self-prioritize work and handle multiple tasks/request from a variety of people
  • A valid driver’s licence and a clean driving record

Responsibilities:

  • Provide regulatory leadership for incidents, including writing clear follow-up letters, forms, and reports to regulators, as required by legislation, and track environmental incidents
  • Manage and coordinate environmental contractors and consultants who conduct surveys and gather data at the site
  • Conduct internal inspections in order to improve environmental compliance
  • Coordinate inspections, investigations, and site visits by regulators at the site
  • Obtain short term operational authorizations and provide notice of outages and operational changes to Federal, Provincial and Municipal regulators, as necessary for the continued operation of the plant
  • Train operational staff regarding regulatory compliance and the continuing importance of environmental protection in a cost constrained production setting
  • Record, file, interpret and disseminate regulatory correspondence
  • Work with internal teams on environmental reports, risks and projects
  • Develop, update, and facilitate training for various environmental programs/initiatives


Location and other Key Details:

  • You will work out of our Base Plant Mine in Fort McMurray, Alberta
  • This is site based position and if you reside outside of Fort McMurray, relocation of your primary residence to within 60 km of Fort McMurray is mandatory. Relocation support will be provided
  • Hours of work are a regular 40-hour work week, Monday to Friday. Shift work may be required
  • Team members carry the environmental on-call hotline phone on a rotating 24-hour basis, and attend the on-site emergency operations centre, if required, during major incidents
