Director – Global Asset Liability Management (GALM)

Product Support & Investment Strategy Team – North America

The Global Asset Liability Management (GALM) team plays a leadership role in the identification and management of asset/liability risks for the global general accounts of Manulife and John Hancock.  As a member of the Product Support & Investment Strategy team, the successful candidate will have opportunities to collaborate with their global colleagues to design and evaluate investment and hedging strategies while supporting business unit growth objectives.  In addition, the candidate will contribute to the continuous improvement of the team’s tools and practices.

The Product Support & Investment Strategy team works closely with professionals across the General Account Investment teams, the business unit finance and pricing teams, and Group functions (e.g., Risk, Actuarial, Capital, Tax, Treasury). The successful candidate is expected to have strong analytical and communication skills, the ability to manage projects and objectives independently and have familiarity with insurance company balance sheets (liabilities, assets, required capital and hedging instruments).  The role will be based in either Toronto or Boston.
 

This role will primarily be focused on supporting our North American operations but there will be opportunities to support global functions as well.


Responsibilities: 

  • Evaluate and recommend general account investment strategies that meet Business Unit, Segment, and Group objectives.
  • Manage projects and influence resources across multiple disciplines (e.g., Investments, Business Units, Risk, Actuarial, Capital, etc…) and geographies.
  • Partner with Business Units to provide investment strategies for new product initiatives.
  • Provide support for ALM initiatives and ad-hoc projects, such as segment consolidation, reinsurance, and M&A products.
  • Research investment and hedging strategy topics, and implications to investment strategy from regulatory changes
  • Maintain and proactively seek opportunities to enhance the current strategy review process and documentation.
  • Relationship management with stakeholders, including regular meetings with colleagues across the globe.

Qualifications:

  • FSA/FCIA with investment experience, or Masters in a quantitative discipline, or CFA/PRM/FRM, or other relevant risk management designation
  • Minimum of 7 years working experience in a financial/investment risk management environment
  • Excellent quantitative finance and/or mathematics skills
  • Strong knowledge of insurance company assets (fixed income, alternative investments, derivatives), liabilities (insurance and wealth management products and characteristics), and asset/liability modelling
  • Prior experience working with or in an ALM function is desirable.
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Strategic thinker with excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Able to work effectively in a team environment, across multiple disciplines, and across multiple time zones
  • Takes initiative and can drive projects forward in a changing environment

Salary range is expected to be between

$103,050.00 CAD - $185,490.00 CAD
