Job Details

Responsible for the installation, repair, and performance of preventive maintenance for a wide range of mechanical equipment or building and construction facilities. Dismantles, repairs, and reassembles equipment and machinery. Makes periodic inspections of and maintains all equipment associated with supplying safety, lighting, plumbing, heating and ventilation, air conditioning, control systems and any other systems for which responsible. It should be understood that all plant employees, will at times, be assigned other duties within their capability aside from their designated area of expertise.
This position of utility worker is one that does an assortment of general maintenance jobs.

Job Description

  • Utility trade work: Able to operate all plant equipment: trucks, bobcat, high reach, tractors, man lifts, ladders, scaffolding, etc.; Completes labor intensive jobs as directed: Furniture moving and set-up, Painting and prep-work,  Grounds keeping duties including: Clean up, Leaf pick up,Trash control, Gutter cleaning and roof patching, Light bulb change outs,General plant clean up, activity setups and break downs, hanging items on walls, signage installations
  • Clean out of storage rooms, basements, hallways, mechanical rooms, common areas.
  • Performs key core changes as assigned.
  • Acts in a general maintenance capacity to complete minor repairs; Is a principle component with snow removal. Attendance in this regard is mandatory; Supplemental custodial duties when required; Cooperates with other university employees and related contractors to achieve the best possible results
  • General Maintenance: Provides work order documentation feedback on trade and non-trade related tasks; Maintains a professional appearance; Maintains a positive customer relations attitude; University function support (special set-ups etc.);Snow removal activity – considered essential personnel; Other duties as assigned
  • Tasks requiring more than a general knowledge of: Carpentry, Electrical, Plumbing and HVAC, Painting, Grounds
  • Although it is recommended that the individual commence to develop advanced skills in one or more of the above.
  • Interacts with students, co-workers, visitors, and other individuals consistent with the values of Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University.


Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent; additional education and/or training required
  • 3 years of related experience required
  • Knowledge of and ability to ensure safe practices in daily operations and effective maintenance and repair services for physical premises.
  • Knowledge of successful approaches, tools, and techniques for dealing with changes and adapting to a changing environment, ability to adapt as needed.
  • Knowledge of and ability to use tools and techniques to prepare for, mitigate, respond to and recover from an emergency.
  • Knowledge of approaches, tools and techniques for anticipating, recognizing and resolving technical (mechanical, electrical, systems or operational) problems.
  • Knowledge of HSE policy, ability to implement HSE policies to ensure that provided products and services are safe for people and the environment and in compliance with legal requirements and standards.
  • Knowledge of and ability to utilize practices, tools, and techniques for communicating with a customer.


Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma/GED or equivalent; additional education and/or training required
  • 3 years of related experience required

    Physical Demands
    Lift over 50 lbs. Push/pull up to 140 lbs. Carry 80 lbs. short distances. Frequent standing/walking, squatting, kneeling, crawling, climbing and reaching overhead.
