Senior Design Engineer

(Rail Infrastructure, Substation & Industrial Projects – 10 to 12 Years Experience)

Overview

Senior engineer responsible for delivering ICT networks, advanced network architectures, Wi‑Fi, radio communications, IoT‑based ICT systems, structured cabling, and BMS solutions for rail infrastructure, traction power substations, depots, and industrial facilities across the UK, Middle East, and APAC projects.

Your role

Network & ICT Infrastructure:

• Design mission‑critical networks (L2/L3, OSPF/BGP, MPLS/SD‑WAN, VXLAN/EVPN).
• Develop ICT infrastructure for stations, substations, depots, SER/BER rooms and industrial control rooms.
• Design fibre backbone, structured cabling, and FTTx solutions for large-scale facilities.
• Produce HLD/LLD, ICDs, IP plans, firewall policies, network security architecture.

Wi‑Fi & Radio Systems:

• Design Wi‑Fi networks for stations, depots, OCC, yards, tunnels and industrial buildings using Ekahau/iBwave.
• Engineer TETRA, DMR, LTE/5G private networks, DAS, tunnel radio systems, GSM calculations
• Conduct RF planning, coverage analysis, and interference mitigation for mission-critical environments
• Integrate satellite communications for remote depots and substations.

IoT‑Based ICT Systems:

• Design IoT‑enabled ICT systems for rail, substation and industrial applications (condition monitoring, energy metering, asset tracking).
• Ensure secure ICT‑OT‑IoT convergence in line with IEC 62443 and ISO 27001.

BMS / SCADA Integration:

• Design BMS systems using BACnet/IP, Modbus, KNX.
• Integrate with SCADA/ICS, traction power monitoring, energy management platforms.
• Support IEC 61850 GOOSE messaging for substation automation.
• Implement virtualized SCADA/ICS environments for resilience and testing.

Compliance & Assurance:

• Ensure compliance with EN 50121, EN 50126/8/9, IEC 61850, IEC 62443, BS 7671 and ISO 27001, ISO 55000 standards.

About you

• Bachelor’s degree in electrical, Electronics, Telecoms, ICT, Instrumentation or similar.
• 10–12 years’ experience in ICT, networks, Wi‑Fi, radio, IoT‑based ICT systems and BMS.
• Proven delivery experience on rail, traction power substations and industrial projects (UK/ME/APAC).
• Strong knowledge of RF engineering (Wi‑Fi, DAS, LTE/5G, TETRA/DMR).
• Experience with comms room design, fibre backbone, FTTx, Server Rooms, Meet me rooms
• Fibre budget calculations
• Strong understanding of SCADA/ICS and OT cybersecurity.

Preferred Skills:

• Ekahau, iBwave
• Cisco, Juniper, RUCKUS
• CCNP, IEC 62443, AWS/Azure IoT certifications.
• Experience with traction SCADA, substation automation (IEC 61850), industrial OT networks.
