Job Description

The Research Charge Analyst is a key member of the Office of Clinical and Community Trials (OCCT) who will promote and facilitate a culture of financial solvency and compliance through accurate and timely clinical charge review (both technical and professional) for all study participants involved in clinical research activities involving clinically billed services. This involves using research billing documentation and the electronic medical record/billing system to support the clinical research revenue cycle.  This includes, but is not limited to, comparing charges to the charge router, internal documentation and seeking concurrence from research staff and physicians to confirm accurate charge posting.

K.S.A.'s:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or five years of relevant experience.

  • One to two years of work experience in healthcare finance (patient billing, collections, account reconciliations, etc.) preferred.

  • One to two years experience in clinical research conduct, clinical research billing, and/or clinical research/trial budget and contract management preferred.

  • Knowledge and experience with aspects of third party reimbursement (Medicare, Blue Cross, Medicaid) preferred.

  • Working knowledge of medical terminology preferred.

  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team and follow through on assignments with minimal direction required.

  • Demonstrated accuracy and precision, attention to detail, and exceptional organizational skills essential

  • Ability to interpret research protocol information preferred.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills required.

  • Ability to manage large quantities of data in a manner which facilitates sharing of information 

  • Ability to handle high volume of work with changing priorities and constant interruptions and establish priorities and deadlines required.

  • Ability to prepare accurate documentation of events required. Ability to maintain confidential material and information required.

  • Personal computer skills; functional experience with integrated software systems and proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

Job Duties:

Research Charge Review

  • Translate internal clinical trial budget and coverage analysis documentation into billing grid and billing protocol within the electronic medical record (Epic).

  • Review clinical charges for accuracy, using reports within the billing system;

  • Verify that CPT codes match billing documentation and make revisions accordingly.

  • Ensure all billable services are included and routed correctly. 

Collaboration

  • Support, assist, and collaborate with other OCCT team members responsible for building billing grids, billing protocols, study records, charge review, reporting, and amendments to ensure information is shared and utilized across the team.

  • Identify opportunities for improving internal processes and/or revision requirements to SOPs.

  • Work closely with leadership and study teams to ensure development of billing grids and billing protocols in fulfillment with timeline expectations

Metrics/Reporting

  • Manage and track workload including build, change requests, status of billing protocols, etc.

  • Produce, analyze, and distribute reports related to billing grid and billing protocol development. 

Training and Education

  • Provide on-going guidance and assistance to research investigators and staff.

  • Partner with the Office of Research Development (ORD) on research billing training initiatives.

  • Understand Epic research billing functionality and be able to serve as an expert resource for users.

  • Assist Senior Clinical Research Billing Manager in the creation of related SOPs. 

  • Other job functions as assigned.
