About the Opportunity
The University of Queensland is seeking an experienced Chief Information Officer (CIO) to lead digital technology services for one of Australia’s most prominent teaching and research institutions. As a senior executive reporting to the Chief Operating Officer and partnering with business leaders, the CIO will serve as a strategic partner to elevate and align IT activities with UQ’s academic, research, and operational priorities.

Key Deliverables
The Chief Information Officer (CIO) is responsible for enabling the University’s teaching, research and professional services through reliable, secure and strategically aligned digital capability. Key areas of focus include:
Ensure the University’s core digital platforms are reliable, resilient and trusted
Lead a mature, pragmatic cyber security and data protection posture to ensure the University is well prepared to respond credibly to incidents
Provide scalable, modern digital infrastructure and systems that actively enable world-class, data-intensive and interdisciplinary research
Establish clear governance and practical use of AI technologies to drive productivity, insight and innovation, while managing ethical, legal and reputational risks.
Deliver integrated, end-to-end digital services that improve the student experience, support wellbeing and retention
Enables major enterprise system implementations and upgrades (e.g. ERP, CRM) in partnership with business owners, ensuring benefits realisation, effective change management and long-term value
Ensure disciplined management of digital investment, transparent cost structures, and the ongoing rationalisation of platforms to support the University’s financial sustainability
Foster a service-oriented culture in ITS, acting as a trusted strategic partner to the Vice-Chancellor, executive leadership and broader UQ community
About You
This role requires a seasoned IT executive with a strong record of strategic leadership in large, complex organisations. The successful candidate will have lead enterprise-wide IT initiatives across infrastructure, enterprise applications, cybersecurity, and operations, and managed substantial budgets with discipline and impact. Operating as a trusted adviser at the executive level, you will have proven capability in anticipating emerging risks while driving innovation and operational effectiveness aligned to strategic priorities.
