The Opportunity:

AIA Australia has an opportunity available for an experienced Senior Legal Counsel. You will be responsible for managing competing timeframes to deliver accurate and timely commercial legal services to the business to a high standard. You will expected to work independently on day-to-day matters, with some guidance from the General Manager - Legal on more complex and high-risk matters. As the Legal department operates under a business partnering model, you will act as business partner and provide strategic advice and support to a number of functions of the business. You will also be called upon to act as legal lead on major projects and initiatives, as allocated by the General Counsel and/or General Manager - Legal.

To do this successfully you will:

  • Provide commercial and corporate legal advice with limited supervision to business partners and other internal stakeholders (including senior management) to minimise exposure to legal and regulatory risk, resolve legal issues and implement key initiatives.
  • Act as legal lead on strategic projects, including as a member of relevant project teams and working groups to provide input on legal issues, as required.
  • Be highly proficient in drafting and negotiating various commercial agreements required by the business, including third party service and administration agreements, agency and distribution agreements, strategic alliance agreements and heads of agreement.
  • Demonstrate a high level of commercial awareness to understand the perspective and requirements of the business.
  • Demonstrate strong judgement and decision-making ability.
  • Have a collaborative attitude and a high level of team engagement.

Successful applications will demonstrate:

  • Extensive post-qualification experience in a commercial legal environment, such as a top or mid tier law firm or quality in-house legal department with strong exposure to the following areas:
  • corporate and commercial law including corporate advisory;
  • mergers & acquisitions, joint ventures and other complex commercial transactions including advising in connection with transaction structures;
  • managing and advising on major strategic commercial projects;
  • extensive contract drafting and negotiation experience including procurement contracts;
  • dealing with, and the provision of legal advice to, senior stakeholders, including to senior executives.
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to liaise with a diverse range of personnel operating at a senior level, including senior executive
  • Experience in the insurance or financial services sector preferable
  • Admission to Practice as a barrister & solicitor in an Australian jurisdiction
