The Oncology Transportation Coordinator/Dispatcher is responsible for the coordination, review, and dispatching of transportation services for oncology patients supported through the SLUHN STAR Transport program. This role serves as a central point of contact for oncology transportation referrals and ensures patients are connected to the most appropriate, safe, and cost‑effective transportation option. Responsibilities include reviewing transportation referrals, coordinating with social work and oncology teams, assessing patient transportation resources (including insurance and public transportation), and scheduling and dispatching STAR oncology transport drivers.

Responsibilities include reviewing transportation referrals, coordinating with social work and oncology teams, assessing patient transportation resources (including insurance and public transportation), and scheduling and dispatching STAR oncology transport drivers.
JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Review incoming oncology transportation referrals for completeness, accuracy, and eligibility for STAR oncology transport.
Coordinate closely with Oncology Social Work, Patient Navigation, Care Management, and clinical teams to clarify transportation needs and ensure timely resolution of referrals.
Serve as a resource to oncology offices by providing guidance on appropriate transportation pathways and STAR program criteria.
Conduct assessments of patient transportation needs and identify appropriate options, including:
Insurance‑covered transportation programs
Public transportation resources
Community or family support options
STAR oncology transport when other options are unavailable
Verify patient insurance coverage related to transportation services and assist in determining appropriate utilization of resources.
Escalate complex or high‑risk transportation cases per established STAR governance and decision‑making standards
Schedule and dispatch STAR oncology transport drivers in accordance with patient appointment times, operational capacity, and geographic considerations.
Coordinate daily driver schedules, route planning, and transport timelines to ensure efficient and patient‑centered service delivery.
Communicate transport details to patients, oncology offices, and drivers, including pickup times and instructions as needed.
Adjust schedules in real time to manage cancellations, delays, and urgent oncology transportation needs
Accurately document transportation determinations, resource utilization, and communication outcomes in appropriate systems
Maintain clear, professional, and timely communication with patients, caregivers, oncology staff, social work, and transportation leadership.
Collaborate with STAR leadership to support quality improvement, workflow refinement, and consistent application of oncology transport standards.
Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information.
Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements.
Demonstrates/models the Network’s PCRAFT values during interactions with all customers.

PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:
Sitting 8 hours per day; 3 hours at a time. Stand up to 1 hour per day; 30 minutes at a time. Walk up to 2 hours per day; 20 minutes at a time. Continuously fingering and handling for data entry, typing, etc. and occasional twisting and turning. Occasionally lift up to 20 lbs. Occasionally carry up to 15 lbs. Frequently stoops, bends, or reaches above shoulder level to retrieve files. Must be able to perceive attributes of an object through touch. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color, peripheral vision and monotony.
EDUCATION:
High School Diploma or equivalent required.
TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
Experience in healthcare coordination, transportation services, dispatching, or patient support roles preferred. Strong organizational, communication, and problem‑solving skills. Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary oncology and social work teams. Proficiency in computer systems and scheduling/communication platforms.
