We are looking for a Structured Trader on the AES Clean Energy Commercial team. The role will manage capacity positions and basis positions to protect AES from financial risk and create analysis at the business unit and individual staff level. The Trader will develop, refine, and utilize commercial analytics as needed to execute transactions and develop strategies in collaboration with other commercial functions in Origination, Term Trading, Pricing, Fundamentals, Legal, Settlements, Finance, and Risk Management. Located in Houston, Texas.

Main Responsibilities: 

 

  • Manage and own merchant capacity positions across PJM, MISO, CAISO, ISO NE, NYISO, SPP 

  • Analyze basis and congestion markets and help develop risk mitigating strategies to manage risk using FTRs, CRRs, TCCs 

  • Report financial performance and strategies to senior leadership 

  • Work with Pricing to value merchant exposures on M&A and development assets 

  • Deliver model improvements and automation to shorten turnaround times necessary to meet aggressive business growth targets 

  • Negotiate contracts with 3rd party counterparties 

  • Be fully trained and compliant to AES and regulatory policies for all products transacted 

  • Work with ETRM team to ensure adequate booking and representation of signed contracts 

  • Work with Risk Management team to follow internal processes and guidelines for model validation and risk quantification 

  • Understand commercial impacts affecting AES CE business, grow their own skills and progress along the career path 

  • Support commercial strategies with general analysis and research 

 

Qualifications: 

 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Science, Engineering, Economics, Finance or similar 

    Master’s Degree in above areas preferred 

  • 6-10 years of relevant work experience in the energy industry in related functions 

  • Deep familiarity with US power markets; Capacity and Resource Adequacy markets preferred, other markets a plus 

  • Detailed understanding of revenue streams associated with renewable assets 

  • Familiarity with operating aspects of power assets 

  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills 

  • More junior candidates will be considered if they are a good fit, likely at an Analyst level 

  • Active deployment of a least one programming language (Python, R, MATLAB, C/C++, VBA) is a plus 

  • Experience with battery energy storage optimization/analytics is a plus
