Media Engineering handles audio, video, and metadata content from ingest through publish - for normalization, processing, and packaging - supporting operator tools and automation for a scalable workflow. We build logic across players and back-end services to measure, control, and optimize playback across our technical stack.
Job Summary:
Disney's Media Engineering Scale and Operations team is seeking an experienced Manager, Software Engineer who is excited to build automation framework, tools and services for apps enjoyed by millions around the world. We build platform agnostic tools to test video on a variety of devices including smart TVs, Chromecast, browser-based devices, Roku, iOS and Android platforms, Playstation, Xbox, and set top boxes. You will recruit, hire, and train a team that will be building scalable, elegant solutions for all of Disney’s player on multiple platforms, including PlayStation, Android, Xbox, and more. Applications that stream video across a wide array of devices including phones, tablets, and TVs. Our highly collaborative group works in tandem with many cross-functional teams. Responsibilities and Duties of the Role:
As a Manager, Software Engineering at Disney, you are ready and willing to be responsible for managing teams as well a wide array of technical aspects. You will be leading, mentoring and guiding other software engineers through their career paths. You assist with critical components including our release process and live production issues. You have and will lead multiple projects from start to finish. While familiar with the high-level aspects of our project, you are also focused on and monitoring the health of the team. You not only seek out leadership opportunities to improve processes, but you do it with finesse and a positive attitude. You are comfortable facilitating career growth amongst team members and are invested in the long-term success of the company.
Responsibilities
● Develop an in depth understanding of the DE&ET software stack and specifically the Test Automation and CI/CD Pipeline.
● Mentoring a team of engineers in proper software development and manage their career growth.
● Create and review architecture and designs for our team’s projects
● Rapidly prototype and implement scalable, reliable, and maintainable media applications using TypeScript, JavaScript, and other web development technologies.
● Ensure that the latest audio and video standards like Dolby Vision, Dolby ATMOS, DTS:X, HDR10+, and more are delivered with full fidelity.
● Develop, Debug, Test and Benchmark various components in the software stack
● Perform online code reviews of pull requests
● Gather additional requirements and spec missing functionality required across various functional teams
● Create and update documentation across the entire software development lifecycle as needed
● Maintain a strong understanding of our code to identify, research and address issues
● Drive strategies that ensure the quality and stability of our deployments, including testing strategies and telemetry approaches
● Help to develop our project’s build system and continuous integration system as needed
Basic Qualifications
● 10+ years of experience in front-end application development with proficiency in writing optimized JavaScript (ES5 &ES6) and TypeScript with a low memory footprint
● 5+ years managing software development teams
● Fluent in C and C++ or Rust
● Willing to learn Rust
● Experience developing and optimizing multi-threaded applications Well-versed in different architectural patterns (MVI/MVVM or equivalent)
● Excellent communication skills who can collaborate well across teams
● You write phenomenal code, tests, and documentation
● Experience resolving production issues ideally on a large scale
● BS or BA in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field or equivalent experience
Preferred Qualifications
· Experience with our common development tools such as: GitHub, Jenkins, Vite, AWS, Confluence, JIRA.
· Experience in Streaming technologies, including:
o HLS (preferred) or DASH
o DRM technologies like Playready or Widevine
o Adaptive Bitrate Streaming Algorithms
o Caption and subtitle formats such as CEA-608 / 708
o Codecs AVC, HEVC, AAC, EAC3
· Cross-Platform Development
· Embedded operating system experience
· Experience developing for gaming consoles (e.g. Playstation, Switch), Android devices (e.g.FireTV), or similar devices
· Familiarity with set-top box development and specialized SoCs from manufacturers like Broadcom, MediaTek, etc.
