The Nursing Triage RN job serves as a liaison between physicians, nurses, and patients via telephone or messaging. This role manages and documents patient phone callspertaining to medical conditions and questions according to established policies and evidence based guidelines. This role demonstrates clinical knowledge and applies this knowledge to a specific patient population.
The Nursing Triage RN job assists the health care team with the prevention of illness and injury, maintenance of wellness, and provision of comfort. This role provides direction and education to patients andfamilies. This role also accurately documents age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care.
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:
Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible or compact state
Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:
Current RN licensure in Virginia Current AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent
Experience REQUIRED:
Minimum of three (3) years of clinical experience
Experience PREFERRED:
Academic Health Care Experience
Experience with similar patient population in an ambulatory care setting or as applicable to the area of practice
Telephone triage experience Triage skills to include familiarity/experience with client interaction on the telephone
Education/training REQUIRED:
Graduate of an accredited RN nursing program; and If not Baccalaureate prepared, enrollment in an accredited Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing program within 24 months of date of hire; and Successful completion of a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing no later than 5 years (or 60 months) from date of hire
Education/training PREFERRED:
Completion of Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program
Certification in specialty area

Accurate verbal and written communication skills, including appropriate grammar and spelling Follows documented physician/licensed independent provider orders and practices within the boundaries of the regulations governing the practice of nursing in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Practice is guided by the ANA Code of Ethics for Nursing and establishednational nursing practice standards.
All practice is guided by and follows the VCUHS policies and procedures and established practice guidelines.
Organizes and plans work with input from the patient/family with specific outcomes and demonstrated use of sound clinical judgment and resources.
Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable): Organizes work and delegates and supervises others (LPNs, etc.)
Additional position requirements:
Clinicians could work varying shifts, weekends and holidays.
Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with the Nurse Manager when needed
