You'll focus on critical areas, including enterprise planning, work estimation methodologies (using Jira), standardization of processes across teams, work-in-progress management, and platform engineering intake. You'll leverage DataDog for observability to measure the impact of process improvements. Success in this role requires a systems-thinking mindset to understand the complex interactions between enterprise processes and team productivity, plus the ability to influence stakeholders without direct authority. This position demands technical understanding and organizational savvy to successfully navigate and improve processes across PayPal's engineering ecosystem.
Your Way to Impact
As the Principal Program Manager for the E3 team, you'll drive meaningful change across PayPal's engineering organization by:
Optimizing the interfaces between Engineering and Product/Commercial teams to ensure alignment on priorities and capabilities
Designing and refining processes to highlight strategic decisions and key information to executives for timely decision-making
Implementing measurements and feedback loops using DataDog for observability to steer teams toward effective execution and ways of working
Developing and refining the SMB-FS process for managing "tech debt" and "one platform" work for product engineering teams from platform engineering teams
Provide guidance for integrating enterprise planning, organization shaping, and work estimation with each other to create cohesive workflows
Championing a culture of continuous improvement that empowers engineers to do their best work
Creating scalable solutions that can be adopted beyond the SMB-FS organization
Job Description
Principal Program Manager, Engineering Excellence & Enablement (E3)
We are looking for a Principal Program Manager for part of our Engineering Excellence & Enablement (E3) team. The ideal candidate will have a passion for continuous, iterative, collaborative process improvement and a record of experience driving improvement across engineering organizations.
Responsibilities:
Work closely with engineering and product leaders across the SMB-FS engineering organization and other areas of PayPal
Facilitate partnerships between Engineering and Product/Commercial teams to enhance collaboration and outcomes
Develop effective methods for bubbling up decisions and key information to the executive level
Create and refine work estimation processes in Jira that increase visibility and effectiveness across engineering teams
Drive standardization of processes and approaches to ensure consistent execution across diverse teams
Provide guidance for integrating enterprise planning, organization shaping, and work estimation with each other to create cohesive workflows
Analyze how enterprise processes and individual teams' operations interact
Identify challenges and friction points in current workflows and systems
Measure the impact of process changes and make data-driven adjustments using DataDog observability metrics
Promote visibility at all layers of the organization and promote best practices through Observability of both the current state and modernization efforts
Requirements:
Proven experience in engineering program management, engineering operations, developer productivity, or similar roles
Strong understanding of software development processes and methodologies
Experience with enterprise planning frameworks and methodologies
A data-driven approach to problem-solving and decision-making
Track record of improving effective collaboration between engineering, product, and commercial teams in complex, enterprise-level organizations
Mastery of work estimation techniques across multiple teams and initiatives
Ability to navigate organizational complexity while advocating for pragmatic applications of process and transformative change
History of implementing high-value observability-driven dashboards and reports for multiple stakeholders and leaders
Proven experience with platform engineering intake processes and technical debt management
Strong communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical concepts for executive audiences
