In the Float Pool, you will work with diverse populations of patients in numerous units, departments and/or locations while learning from many of our best caregivers. As a Patient Companion on the team, you will assist with constant observation of one to two patients providing comfort and companionship while delivering direct and indirect care. Your primary focus will be assuring basic patient safety through tasks including documentation, assisting with activities of daily living, assisting with mobility and transfers, applying restraints and assisting in taking vital signs. A PRN caregiver in this position works varying shifts from 7:00AM – 7:30PM or 7:00PM – 7:30AM. Working 48 hours per 6-week period is required.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Assist with direct and indirect patient care for one to two patients, such as rooming, vital signs, weight and pulse oximetry. If assigned to a closed unit, you will observe three to four patients.
Assure patient safety by ensuring that catheters, tubes or other medical equipment have not been removed or disconnected.
Accompany and assist patients at all times, including during transport, tests, transfers and ambulation.
Identify and report changes in patient status to an RN or physician.
Initiate CPR and other emergency measures.
Acknowledge patient concerns/needs and notify appropriate caregivers for assistance when necessary.
Complete all documentation and provide hand-off communication to caregivers responsible for the patient.
Collaborate with members of the health care team to promote the delivery of patient care and the overall functioning of the unit.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
High School Diploma or GED
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Heartsaver Level of Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross upon or within three months of hire
Knowledge and understanding of basic patient care activities, such as basic hygiene, skin care and vital signs
