PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

The Principal Scientist is a senior member of the R&D team in Animal Nutrition. This role helps shape the strategic direction and innovation roadmap for the business and leads and oversees execution of R&D programs and projects in North America to achieve strategic innovation goals. The Principal Scientist ensures proper processes and procedures are in place to support R&D activities in a safe and effective manner and mentors other team members to help them thrive in a fast-paced and rapidly growing business. In addition, this role is a key liaison with other R&D teams within Symrise nutrition, and a critical resource for other business functions.

TASKS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Lead the Animal Nutrition R&D team within Symrise Nutrition in North America
• Help develop the strategic innovation roadmap for Animal Nutrition
• Ensure the timely delivery of projects in support of the innovation pipeline by first-hand execution as well as mentoring other team members in delivering results and projects in a timely manner
• Interface with key business functions to ensure new products and developments meet customer expectations and regulatory requirements
• Collaborate with peers in other Symrise Nutrition R&D units to exchange ideas, know-how, and run joint projects where applicable.
• Implement and/or improve R&D function processes in alignment with the broader Symrise R&D function to ensure compatibility and a common language
• Develop short to medium term resource plans to ensure proper staffing and resourcing to deliver projects in alignment with the strategic plan and innovation roadmap
• Interface with internal company leadership on the status and progress of R&D programs
• Support sales in interacting with technical counterparts in customer organizations to aid implementation of Symrise technology into customer products.
• This role will require travel (both domestic and international) – total estimated travel: 15-30%
• Other duties as assigned

TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

• Degree in a Life Sciences discipline, BS minimum, advanced degree (MS/PhD/MBA) is a plus.
• 10+ years track record of strong and progressive R&D experience
• Demonstrated success in leading and developing others  
• Ability to work and collaborate in a multinational and multicultural organization
• Willingness to explore, learn, and master new technical areas and techniques as required
• Excellent two-way communication skills; confident in delivery regardless of audience
• Has good interpersonal skills and ability to work with others, both within the team as well as other teams in the organization, including domestic or abroad.
• Experience in egg, meat, or dairy, or in pet foods & treats is a plus.
