Transportation Manager

Position Summary:

Manages the transportation and distribution system and procedures to ensure the efficient and economic delivery of Halperns’ Steak and Seafood products.  

Annual rate: $70K - $75K

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday

Essential Functions:

  • Manages transportation services through the consistent application of standard practices and procedures through the development, management and evaluation of process improvement programs for transportation.
  • Ensures all government DOT regulatory compliance for transportation/fleet is maintained by reporting, setting best practices, goal setting and auditing.
  • Collaborates regularly with sales staff to ensure customer satisfaction to include periodically attending sales meetings, visiting customer locations to assess delivery requirements, and approves off day delivery requests and temporary requested routes.
  • Performs administrative tasks to include invoice approval and processing, payroll, incentive review. Completes shift or departmental reports as needed.  Responds to employee questions regarding policies, efficiently and effectively by regularly communicating to employees about issues that affect them (changes in the incentive structure, changes in procedures, division results, and task team findings) through meetings, written materials, brief pre-shift updates and one-on-one discussions.  Listens to employee concerns, suggestions, requests, and goals to provide feedback to employees to resolve issues.
  • Addresses safety issues and ensures that all policies and procedures are followed to include completing the appropriate paperwork for reporting work related injuries and maintaining contact with injured workers to encourage and facilitate their early return to work.  Investigates incidents (near misses, injuries, property damage, collisions, etc), and identifies preventative measures, corrective actions, and follows up on those measures.  Issues safety violations and completes appropriate reports, and random drug screens per DOT and GFS requirements.
  • Conducts safety training as provided by Safety/Compliance and ensures that department specific safety and job training requirements are met.   Conducts or directs new employee job/department orientation.
  • Plan and schedules all tractor-trailers within division for preventative maintenance.  Ensures that a sufficient quantity of usable equipment including dolly, ramps, trailer and locks are available.
  • Completes required coaching trips with drivers and assist with food shows, and other special projects. May fill in to drive/deliver routes when necessary.
  • Interviews, hires, train, and retain staff.  Conducts performance monitoring of staff, initiating follow through with disciplinary action and termination in consultation with Human Resources when appropriate for the department.  Mentors, motivates, and develops staff and acts as a role model and resource to them.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities:

  • Must have Good written and verbal communication, problem solving, decision making, customer service and interpersonal skills to represent the department and speak at minor functions.
  • Must have good time management and organizational skills. 
  • Must be courteous, motivated, flexible, open minded, a visionary, enthusiastic, encouraging, and able to delegate responsibilities.
  • Must have an understanding of DOT, OSHA, EEOC, and BWC regulatory agencies and applicable laws.
  • Must have good time management and organizational skills. 
  • Knowledge of spreadsheet, word processing, presentation, email and internet software applications.
  • Ability to operate a delivery van and tractor-trailer CMV
  • Must be able to operate a dolly with a load weighing up to 350 pounds.
