The Opportunity:

Our location in Lake Forest, IL currently has an opportunity for the Area Scientific Director- within our Medical and Scientific Affairs Team

Our diagnostic solutions are used in hospitals, laboratories, and clinics around the globe.

The crucial information derived from our tests, instruments and informatics systems are often the first step in patient care decision making for hundreds of health conditions from heart attacks to blood disorders to infectious diseases and cancers.

The Area Scientific Director is responsible for developing and implementing scientific programs and projects within Area in Medical Affairs, contributing to Medical Affair’s scientific and medical strategy around education and engagement, and providing subject matter expertise on our assays for both internal and external stakeholders. This role is critical to growing Abbott’s position as a Medical and Scientific leader in the market and works closely with Medical and Scientific Research, Medical Affairs, Marketing, Commercial, Quality, Regulatory and Technical Operations.

Our Medical Affairs team advances patient care by engaging in scientific exchange with external medical experts and industry leaders, ensuring our products' scientific value is understood.

  • Develop and implement annual medical and scientific strategies across Core Lab’s portfolio.
  • Advance Abbott’s scientific and medical presence in the marketplace and fortify our position as scientific leaders.
  • Act as a resource for internal and external stakeholders when technical subject matter expertise.
  • Create and execute a plan to preserve and scale access to scientific/technical information and subject matter expertise in a sustainable, consistent, and reproducible manner.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • Develop and maintains current standards of relevant to medical and technology trends across laboratory medicine.
  • Understand core medical and scientific literature related to the implementation and clinical applications of products.
  • Become the technical SME within the field and Medical Affairs team on our products to the extent that they can participate, comment, troubleshoot and help in complaint and problem-solving for customers.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with Key Opinion Leaders and manage collaborations with both internal and external partners globally.
  • Connect, communicate, and train internal employees to provide a thorough understanding of the science behind the Abbott’s assays and their utility.
  • Create, develop and execute medical and scientific projects, education and engagements for patients, clinicians, and laboratory professionals.
  • Represents medical and scientific at meetings with local associations and local regulatory agencies.
  • Develop and runs Familiarity studies (FAM) as needed for product launches.
  • Present at industry medical and scientific conferences.
  • Engage with and understand our customers - provide technical consultations on products, complaint handling and general technical education.
  • Contribute to the development of medical and scientific guidelines for the use of our product.
  • Bring customer insights from the field back to Abbott. 
  • Identify and communicate technical product needs for new products and on-market product revisions.
  • Implement and maintain the effectiveness of the Quality System in compliance with corporate guidelines and policies related to medical research practices.

Education Skills and Experience:

Required Education:

  • PhD or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 10 years in a technical or scientific industry role, including at least 5 years in a product development/scientific management role, and over 2 years in a clinical healthcare service environment.

Experience:

  • Experience working in a clinical setting and interfacing with healthcare providers highly desirable.
  • Expert knowledge of the underlying principles of assay design and laboratory techniques.
  • Expert knowledge of the IVD industry and diagnostic products on the market/competitive landscape.
  • Understanding of interface between laboratory and health system – including C-suite and direct healthcare providers such as physicians and nurses.   
  • Top notch problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with an emphasis on clear communication of scientific information to professionals as well as those without a strong technical background.
  • Strong scientific writing skills and in-depth knowledge of cross-divisional interfaces.
  • Track record of developing strong cross-functional collaborations.
  • Demonstrated history of working with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and developing strong relationships/partnerships with external institutions, key scientists, and/or medical professionals.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated leadership capabilities.
  • Strategic mindset. Highly motivated and able to work independently. Proven history of execution on projects.

    $143,300.00 – $286,700.00

    In specific locations, the pay range may vary from the range posted.
