As Blood Bank Lead Medical Technologist, you ensure the accuracy and timely reporting of laboratory test results by providing technical leadership and guidance to testing personnel within the Laboratory Department. In this role, you oversee operations within your assigned specialty area based on your expertise and training while supporting quality, compliance, and efficient laboratory workflow.
A caregiver in this role works an evening/night rotation varying between 2:00 p.m. – 10:30 p.m. or 10:00 p.m. – 6:30 a.m.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
Demonstrate knowledge and application of clinical laboratory medicine principles to ensure accurate test results.
Perform routine and complex laboratory testing (waived, moderately complex, and highly complex as defined by CLIA) using standard and specialized instrumentation in accordance with established procedures.
Prepare, label, and store reagents and chemical solutions according to laboratory standards.
Evaluate the validity of test results using quality control standards, instrumentation checks, and departmental policies.
Record and report laboratory test results accurately and in a timely manner.
Initiate corrective actions to resolve quality assurance deficiencies and maintain compliance with established standards.
Coordinate workflow with team members to maximize productivity and efficiency during assigned shifts.
Perform, document, and review preventive maintenance on laboratory instruments and equipment.
Provide supervision and training to medical technology students and new laboratory personnel.
Adhere to laboratory safety protocols to maintain a safe work environment.
Demonstrate proficiency with laboratory computer systems and related software.
Compile laboratory data, statistics, and reports.
Maintain professional competency through continuing education and ongoing professional development.
Participate in staff meetings to support effective communication and departmental collaboration.
Complete all required mandatory education and in-service training.
Assume supervisory responsibilities in the absence of the supervisor or as assigned.
Assist with the validation and verification of new laboratory assays by collecting, analyzing, and preparing data for review.
Develop and update technical procedures for supervisory and medical director review.
Train medical technologists and medical laboratory technicians on new testing procedures and support implementation of new clinical tests.
Serve as a technical resource by resolving complex laboratory issues and assisting with interpretation and review of clinical results.
Monitor pending logs and worksheets to ensure timely completion.
Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve complex technical issues affecting laboratory operations.
Perform and oversee troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of laboratory instruments and equipment.
Assist with maintaining current laboratory procedure manuals and completing required annual reviews.
Support employee competency assessments and ongoing performance evaluations.
Assist with proficiency testing by distributing samples, submitting results to CAP, reviewing outcomes, and troubleshooting deficiencies.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
Doctorate, masters, bachelor’s degree or associates degree in a chemical, physical, biological or clinical laboratory science or medical technology from an accredited institution
Current Florida licensure at the technologist levels
One or more of Microbiology, Immunohematology or other licenses
Two years of laboratory experience
Working knowledge and understanding of computer functions
Demonstrated knowledge and theory of applicable Clinical Laboratory Medicine
Complete all required continuing education required to maintain specific certification
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Certification
Blood bank experience
