SUMMARY
The Manager of Risk and Claims Administration is responsible for managing all facets of JOANN’s insurance and risk management programs. Primary responsibilities are as follows: comprehensive risk analysis and administration, including management of key relationships with external partners (insurance brokers, carriers, and third-party administrators); identification and management of specific exposures; placement of adequate insurance coverage across all lines of business; management of the Company’s overall claims process; field reporting and claims management; and administration of life insurance policies. Manages all responsibilities related to insurance policies, including preparation of financial forecasts and annual plan and reviewing overages and audits. Sets appropriate policies and procedures to manage risk and control losses, including chairing the Company’s Safety Committee, with the ongoing goal to improve Team Member safety in JOANN's Store Support Center (SSC), Distribution Centers (DCs), as well as Team Member and customer safety in JOANN's stores.
JOB DUTIES
- Risk Analysis and Administration:
- Manage and apply risk financing techniques to all coverage review and renewal processes. Review risk management data and manage procurement for insurance renewals, insurance policy audits, and the collection and maintenance of policy underwriting information.
- Provide methodology to identify and analyze the financial impact of loss to the Company.
- Manage key relationships with external service providers (insurance brokers, consultants, carriers, and third-party administrators). Perform all required financial reporting to insurance broker/consultant.
- Maintain all insurance policies. Manage and coordinate the payment of insurance risk management related costs. Manage the process of issuing and maintaining certificates of insurance and surety bonds.
- Manage the administration, accounting and reporting for Company owned life insurance policies.
- Review contracts, proposed facilities, and/or new program activities for loss and insurance implications.
- Manage the budget/projection process related to the Company’s insurance and risk programs. Analyze variances to forecast and collaborate with necessary parties across all business units to resolve.
- Claims Management:
- Manage team of Risk and Workers’ Compensation Specialists.
- Manage relationships with 3rd party entities involved in supporting the Company’s claims process. Work with a panel including the Chief Legal Officer, Assistant General Counsel, Risk Specialist and outside Legal Counsel to manage litigated claims from occurrence to settlement.
- Manage and maintain all claim documentation.
- Proactively respond to and manage field inquiries related to claims or potential claims. Provide support in setting policies and procedures regarding store safety and claims.
- Attend mediations and trials as necessary.
- Reporting:
- Serve as Administrator for the Company's risk management reporting system.
- Develop and maintain reporting that provides proper visibility to risk management programs and costs to executive and officer level.
- Develop and maintain reporting to field that gives proper visibility to accident and claim trends.
- Manage, mentor and develop the Risk team, including Risk and Workers’ Compensation Specialists. Make and enact recommendations for process improvements.
- Lead the Safety Committee:
- Schedule Committee meetings, set the meeting agendas, verify that action items are completed.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Manages the Risk team, including the Risk and Workers’ Compensation Specialists. Motivates, develops and challenges team to high levels of performance.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Education Minimum: Bachelor's Degree - Accounting / Finance, Risk Management, or related field.
Education Preferred: Master’s in Business Administration, Accountancy or Finance. CPA and/or CRM and/or CMA certification preferred.
Experience Minimum: 6+ years of progressively responsible experience in Finance or Accounting or the technical aspects of Risk Management, Insurance, Claims, or related field. 2+ years of prior supervisory experience. Experience managing and having responsibility for multi-million-dollar budgets.
Experience Preferred: 7+ years of progressively responsible experience in Finance or Accounting, or the technical aspects or Risk Management, Insurance, Claims, or related field. Retail risk management experience preferred.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- This role requires in-person attendance 4 days a week at the Store Support Center (SSC) located in Hudson, OH. Flexibility to work remotely when requested is determined by management and business needs.
- Sit or stand at a workstation for extended periods while maintaining focus and productivity.
- Move around an office space and between buildings on a large campus, including reaching for files, retail product, supplies, or equipment, as well as the ability to adapt to various workstation setups.
- Work standard business hours and extended hours as needed based on task and project demands.
- Utilization of all communication styles - written, verbal, electronic options.
- Lift and carry office supplies, documents, retail product or equipment weighing up to 20 pounds as needed for tasks such as organizing or setting up workstations.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Demonstrated leadership and initiative in managing an effective, innovative and successful risk management program.
- Detailed knowledge of all lines of property and casualty insurance, including General and Excess liability, Directors and Officers liability, Cyber liability, Workers’ Compensation, and other lines of insurance applicable to retailers.
- Demonstrated ability to provide high quality risk management advice to Company leadership and other personnel on a wide range of risk, safety, insurance and claim issues.
