Job Description Summary

The Chemical Operations Lead is responsible for the planning and/or preparation and execution of the WFGD Plant chemical analysis and management. He / She is responsible for the safe operation of plant systems within his/her scope of work.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities

  • Organize and supervise the safe operation of the WFGD systems/equipment/plant (corporate directives, site rules, safety regulations, shift plan, shift log, etc.)
  • Ensure proper operation of the plant according to the plant operating procedures and within the chemistry specifications.
  • Manage, supervise and co-ordinate personnel assigned to him/her.
  • Make sure that the personnel assigned to him/her are fully acquainted with the corporate directives, site-specific rules, safety regulations and environmental protection measures and that they perform their work accordingly.
  • Ensure that the chemical lab team perform the testing & operation according to the specifications and engineering documents, considering the safety instructions, environmental protection measures and local regulations.
  • Advise the Operations Lead/ Engineering Team of any information related to the process deviation and any chemistry escalations.
  • Report deviations from the agreed goals and define and implement corrective measures by arrangement with, and with the support of the Engineers.
  • Keep a diary to record daily work, occurrences, problems, special information, etc. plus a list of pending items.
  • Maintain the plant chemistry history and lab equipment in compliance to the acceptable standard and specifications.
  • Train the customer staff in the WFGD chemical analysis regime.
  • Updating of the Operating Instructions manuals.
  • Ensure safe handling and storage of chemicals and other hazardous materials in accordance with and local safety rules.
  • Ensure the plant chemistry is monitored and controlled.

Required Qualifications

  • Dip., B.Tech., or BSc. degree in Chemistry from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 5 years of post qualification experience in the Engineering, Operation, Maintenance and troubleshooting of Thermal Power Plants, and associated equipment and systems.
  • Experience in the Operation of the WFGD or similar plants including the
  • Solid knowledge of the WFGD plant chemistry.
  • Experience in the Control Room Operations and chemical lab operations.
  • Management / leadership experience
  • Solid knowledge of Eskom Plant Safety Regulations (PSR) and GE Permit to Work (PTW) systems
  • Good computer skills (PC, Windows, Office) and relevant discipline programs
