Role Summary

The Groton Site Affairs Lead reports to the Head of Program Management & Scientific Operations (PMSO) within Pfizer Research & Development (PRD), with matrixed responsibilities to Groton site leaders. The role is accountable for ensuring the Groton R&D site remains a preeminent research facility while strengthening Pfizer’s ability to recruit and retain top talent, and supporting a culture aligned with corporate values that can deliver the Pfizer portfolio. This role interacts with multiple functional lines across PRD and Pfizer Oncology Division (POD) and supports special projects, scientific content and local and regional external groups.

The Groton Site Affairs Lead coordinates strategy and implementation for colleague engagement, site operations, internal/external outreach, and communications for the Groton site.  The role directly leads the Groton Site Affairs team and partners with the Groton Site Head (along with other senior leaders) at the site. 

This role will oversee day-to-day operations and serve as the main point of contact for all Research Units and Partner Lines that operate at Groton. They will be required to build strong and sustainable relationships with leaders and colleagues across the site and take a proactive and strategic approach to building partnerships externally to help attract, develop, and retain talent.

The colleague in this role will be a key strategic partner for the Groton site and will be expected to lead major initiatives and a central member to innovation initiatives that will contribute to the site and Pfizer, overall.  The individual should have a proactive and strategic approach to building partnerships externally and working to influence, develop, and attract and retain talent.

Job Responsibilities

Colleague Engagement:

  • Leverage business and scientific expertise to lead the Site Affairs and provide leadership for the Groton site
  • Enable delivery of the Pfizer portfolio through the scientists and staff that reside at the Groton site
  • Accountable for colleague engagement strategy at Groton site, in partnership with the Groton Site Head and Groton Leadership team to enable every colleague to do their best work and feel valued for their contribution to portfolio goals
  • Lead the Site Affairs teams for internal events with Pfizer Executive Leadership Team, Pfizer R&D leadership, and other executive leader visits
  • Serve as key strategic partner for the Groton site, and an active participant in initiatives that will drive site productivity, talent retention, and Pfizer portfolio delivery
  • Collaborate with the Site Affairs lead across other Pfizer R&D Sites to support programming that will bring the PRD R&D sites closer together, identifying areas of synergy and opportunities for cross-site programming
  • Organize and manage internal events, such as town halls, senior leadership visits, holiday events, CRG events etc.

Communications and External Relations:

  • Responsible for leading internal communications to educate, update and connect with colleagues and staff
  • Lead a Cross-Site forum to bring Site Affairs leaders across R&D together to share learnings and identify areas of opportunity for cross-site collaboration
  • Partner with Pfizer-Corporate Communications, Corporate Affairs and Government Relations to support and strengthen Pfizer’s presence and scientific profile in the Groton, CT region
  • Represent Pfizer at key industry/regional organizations (e.g., CT Chamber of Commerce)
  • Organize and manage Pfizer events for external stakeholders, key opinion leaders, investigators and biotech companies to facilitate partnering activities
  • Maintaining relationships with executives at partner companies, and staying apprised of organization changes, decision rights, reporting structures, etc.
  • Ensure that external outreach activities are aligned with Pfizer’s strategic goals

Site Operations:

  • Responsible for overseeing site operations activities related to the Groton R&D site
  • Leadership of the Groton Strategic Site Facilities Plan during design and multi-year implementation program
  • Ensure that Groton is transformed into a contemporary, state-of-the art R&D site that is designed optimally to support a highly productive R&D environment
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for Discovery & Early Development (D&ED) organization, PharmSci, Global Clinical Supply and Partner Lines to resolve issues that are impeding portfolio delivery or affecting colleague morale
  • Represent the scientists and all staff at sites to Enabling Functions to ensure staff have the resources and facilities needed to deliver the portfolio
  • A key decision-maker for prioritizing site facility & enhancement projects, such as space planning and renovations to optimize laboratory and office space utilization
  • Member of the Groton Crisis Management & Business Continuity team
  • With the Groton Site Head, lead the site’s Leadership team to set the strategic direction
  • Responsible for managing the Site Affairs Operation budget for the Groton site

Community Outreach:

  • Develop and implement a CT Community Engagement strategy including charitable donations and volunteer programming
  • Represent Pfizer with key local charitable organizations (e.g., United Way of Southeastern CT, Child and Family Organization)

Qualifications

  • BA/MS or Advanced science degree required with 15+ years of relevant work experience
  • Experience in budget management required
  • Track record in establishing and managing external partnerships
  • Hands-on experience with managing drug discovery and development projects preferred
  • Experience in developing and executing communications strategies preferred
  • A strong track record as a strategic thinker and implementer, and ability to make quality decisions
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with ability to influence decision making with finesse and diplomacy
  • High energy and emotional intelligence combined with displayed leadership skills to work collaboratively in a complex, cross-functional environment
  • Self-starter, able to work independently, and entrepreneurial; ability to create and implement new initiatives
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced dynamic environment while demonstrating a resourceful, positive attitude and superior work ethic

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $191,300.00 to $318,800.00. In addition, this position is eligible for participation in Pfizer’s Global Performance Plan with a bonus target of 22.5% of the base salary and eligibility to participate in our share based long term incentive program.
