Job Description:

Lead Software Engineer – (Java and API)

The Platforms and Engineering group is a team of skilled professionals dedicated to supporting and enhancing Sun Life's technology-based solutions. Our focus is on discovering new ways to help our clients achieve lifetime financial security, live healthier lives, and connect with us. We are currently seeking a Lead Software Engineer to work closely with the Architecture team and the Principal Software Engineer on a multi-year program to modernize an Insurance retail platform. In this role, you will be responsible for creating designs for highly complex integrations of client and advisor data to meet business requirements. To be successful, you must be an effective change agent, capable of championing and leading technical modernization while maintaining system and operational stability. Additionally, you must be technically adaptable, as you will be collaborating with various technical teams.

What will you do?

  • Assist in shaping the technical strategy by investigating and analyzing requirements, and identifying innovative options
  • Participate in the decision-making process on technology to meet business outcomes and align to the architectural strategy
  • Demonstrate expert knowledge in performance, scalability, distributed architecture, and engineering best practices
  • Provide day-to-day engineering and technology problem-solving, coaching, direction, and guidance to agile team members

What you need to succeed:


You have 10+ years of professional, hands-on experience in application design and development, with expertise in the following areas:

  • Java Spring Boot framework
  • RESTful API development
  • Relational and NoSQL databases
  • DevOps tools such as BitBucket, CDD, Jenkins
  • Experience with the SAFe Agile methodology
  • Knowledge of the Insurance Retail space would be considered an asset


Individual skills:

  • Proven leadership abilities to influence and collaborate effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Experience in mentoring and training engineers on best practices in software development
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to articulate ideas and explain complex technical topics to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Proven problem-solving skills with the capacity to lead, coach, and guide multiple teams
  • Ability to inspire people and teams, building momentum and enthusiasm around a shared vision

Special Requirements:

  • Occasional travel between Sun Life locations (Toronto, Waterloo) may be required depending on work assignment
  • Periodic weekend/after-hours work may be required to support project implementations and system upgrades. 

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.  It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.  In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.  Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
