The Nurse Leader Emeritus is a retired or experienced nurse who improves clinical practice and operations through mentorship and coaching while coordinating with an assigned nurse leader or on a project to support the delivery of patient care services. The nurse demonstrates advanced skills and expertise in leadership and management, and embodies the Jefferson Nurse mission, vision, and values.

Job Duties

  • Interacts with co-workers, patients, their family/designated care partner(s), and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson. (Do not delete, move or over-write this statement)
  • Assists with managing clinical nursing practice and safe patient care delivery to achieve compliance with professional, regulatory bodies, hospital and department standards and to meet customer satisfaction
  • Assists with managing human, fiscal and other resources needed to facilitate clinical nursing practice and patient care.
  • Recognizes the patients, their family/designated care partner(s) in providing safe, compassionate and coordinated care based on respect for patient's personal preferences, priorities, needs, and cultural beliefs and values.
  • Creates an environment of belonging and inclusion.
  • Champions the Jefferson Nursing Professional Practice Model by modeling and encouraging caring relationships and behaviors in order to empower nurses to foster cohesive teams and promote quality care.
  • Facilitates the development of licensed and non-licensed nursing personnel to achieve and maintain competency of staff and promote teamwork.
  • Participates in strategic planning activities of the department of nursing and develops goals and objectives that support the institution's strategic plan.
  • Demonstrates effective leadership in critical thinking, conflict management, and problem solving to achieve desired outcomes.
  • The Emeritus Nurse, with leadership experience, will mentor new nurse leaders. Emeritus Nurses mentoring in nursing leadership and management can be described simply as leaders developing leaders.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited school of nursing
  • 5 years nursing leadership experience required
  • Patient-and Family-Centered Practice
    Knowledge of how to convey respect and collaborate with each patient, family and/or designated care partner in care and care planning.
  • Cultural Awareness
    Knowledge of people with diverse backgrounds and the ability to convey respect and connect effectively.

    Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques, ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors. Uses the language of partnership with patients and families, engaging them in their health and health care. Appropriately and respectfully delegates to other team members.

    Ability to motivate and inspire others to achieve extraordinary outcomes and in the process, develop their own leadership capacity.

    Ability to think and plan for the future and identify objectives to support effective and efficient patient care operations.

    Ability to promote and support activities and decisions that put patients, families, and staff first.
  • Structural Empowerment
    Ability to engage in the growth and development of their colleagues through facilitating participation in professional development activities, shared governance, or community health outreach.
  • Evidence Based Practice
    Understanding of contemporary evidence based standards of care and practice in order to achieve and promote its establishment in clinical practice.
  • RN - Licensed Registered Nurse - PA - State of Pennsylvania
  • BLS - Basic Life Support AHA - American Heart Association or American Red Cross


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Nursing (MSN) strongly preferred.


    Physical Demands
    Lift and carry 25 lbs. frequent sitting/standing, frequent keyboard use, *patient care providers may be required to perform activities specific to their role including kneeling, bending, squatting and performing CPR.
