Job Description:

Under the general direction of the Pharmacy Manager, the retail pharmacy technician is responsible for performing tasks involved in the preparation and distribution of medications checked by a licensed Pharmacist while under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist.


Essential Responsibilities:

Performs duties of Pharmacy Technician I:

  • Highly detail oriented and well organized.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate clearly with pharmacy staff.
  • Responsible for reporting safety issues and errors in a timely manner to a supervisor.
  • While awaiting receipt of an Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy Technician Permit, responsibilities will be limited to tasks of auxiliary supportive personnel, as permitted by the Oklahoma Board of Pharmacy in Section 535:15-5-7.3. in the Oklahoma Pharmacy Law Book:
    • Retrieve prescriptions or files as necessary;
    • Clerical tasks such as data entry, typing labels and maintaining patient profiles;
    • Secretarial tasks such as telephoning, filing, and typing;
    • Accounting tasks such as record keeping, maintaining accounts receivables, third party billing and posting;
    • Inventory control tasks including monitoring, pricing, dating, invoicing, stocking pharmacy, and preparation of purchase orders; and,
    • Help maintain a clean and orderly pharmacy.

  • After receipt of the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy Technician Permit:
    • Subsequent to verified order entry by a Doctor of Pharmacy, places properly packaged medication in labeled containers to be verified by a Doctor of Pharmacy.
    • Performs light housekeeping duties.
    • Restocks returned meds.
    • Assists in receiving, checking in and shelving of medications when received from vendors.
    • Rotates stock as needed to reduce outdating.
    • Weighs, measures, and mixes drugs and other medicinal compounds, and fills bottles or capsules with correct quantity and composition of preparation.  
    • Stores and preserves biological, vaccines, serums, and other drugs subject to deterioration, utilizing refrigeration and other methods.  

               

Additional Duties for Level III:

  • Proficient in Third Party Resolution.
  • Initiating Prior Authorizations and follow through.
  • Proficient in OUH’s patient assistance program and traditional copay assistance programs.
  • Inventory Management.
  • Assisting in training of Tech I and II positions.
  • Assisting in MTM outcomes.
  • Compounding annual skills assessment and proficiency.
  • Understanding of 340B program and certification.
  • Screening for 340B eligibility and trouble shooting.

General Responsibilities:
Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:


Education: High school diploma or GED required.


Experience: Four [4] years at an external pharmacy experience or two [2] years of experience at an OU Health Pharmacy required.


Licensure/Certifications/Registrations Required: Active permit as a Pharmacy Technician by the Oklahoma State Board of Pharmacy within 6 weeks after placement. National Pharmacy Technician Certification required. BLS certification and Immunization Administration Certificate preferred. If technician holds an Immunization Administration Certification, BLS certification will be required.

  • Ability to accurately read and understand written materials and instructions
