Job Description Summary:

The physician extender nurse will assist the physicians with hospital-based consults and admissions. RN will function within the scope of practice. Responsible for being a point of contact for the emergency department when patient admissions or consults are required and will distribute to the hospitalist physicians to ensure and track fair and even distribution between the group. Will work closely with the on-call physician and others to assist with documenting care in the patient’s medical record under the direction of the medical provider. Minimum of an Associate degree in Nursing required BSN preferred. Prefer candidate with a minimum of 3 years experience in the area of clinical expertise. The employee is subject to call back and overtime as required by the hospital.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Point of contact for the emergency department for admissions and consultations.
  • Liaison between ER physicians and staff with hospitalist physicians.
  • Tracks and distributes admission and consultations evenly to the hospitalist physicians.
  • Assist physician with patient consults and admissions by obtaining information from the patient and/or patient records to assist with the formation of the plan of care.
  • Records progress of patient on progress notes which will be countersigned by the physician.
  • If needed and requested by the physician, may assist with rounds.
  • Receives calls from floor RN's for the on-call hospitalist.
  • Assists physicians with procedures or examinations if requested and within the scope of practice.
  • Performs specified patient care with a high degree of skill, minimal discomfort to the patient, and minimal supervision.
  • May accept verbal orders from the physician, recording and then reading back to the physician for confirmation.
  • Refers to all quality issues to the Medical Director of Hospitalist Services.
  • Attends monthly staff and team meetings.
  • Contributes to the development, implementation of the patient care plan.
  • Responds to medical emergencies initiate CPR or appropriate action and notify appropriate personnel.
  • Performs related responsibilities as required or directed.
     

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION:

  • Minimum of an Associate degree in Nursing required BSN preferred.  
     

LICENSURE, REGISTRATION, CERTIFICATION:

  • Education requirements as stated above. BLS certification must be obtained within the orientation period, and certification must be kept current while in this position.  
     

EXPERIENCE:

  • Proficiency in the ability to demonstrate skills according to current system policies and procedures. 3 years of experience in the area of clinical expertise preferred. Skill and proficiency in the area of chart review for appropriate utilization of resources and quality of care issues. Prefer but not required, the candidate with physician extender experience.
