Position Summary:

NRECA’s Innovation and Emerging Technologies team is looking for an experienced energy industry professional who is passionate about advancing a portfolio of distributed energy resources (DER) research projects, product development capabilities, utility business model innovations, and other energy services on behalf of co-operative utilities. You will work with experienced energy industry colleagues and on behalf of hundreds of nimble utilities who are interested in advancing their operations and deployment of DER and related controls.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manages research and demonstration projects and publications, from idea generation through completion, including needs assessments, technology surveillance, and scoping and deliverables.
  • Leads internal work groups, utility member advisory groups, or a combination thereof regarding distributed generation, virtual power plants, DERMS, demand response, and the integration of the electrification of loads and transportation.
  • Manages existing federally funded projects in distributed energy and microgrids, and where appropriate, supports obtaining additional funding.
  • Leads efforts within NRECA to guide co-ops as they transition to new business models. This includes integration of new technologies, data, and processes into co-op operations, and the formation of strategic partnerships with technology vendors and large commercial and industrial (C&I) consumers.
  • Collaborates and supports NRECA’s Government Relations, Education and Training, and other NRECA departments, committees or issues teams; outside organizations such as the RUS, FERC, DOE, CFC, NRTC, IEEE, and rural electric statewide organizations.
  • Represents NRECA and electric cooperatives at national conferences, meetings, working groups and in interviews as the subject matter expert on the topics of focus. Provides strategic and tactical guidance to groups that advance the interests central to electric cooperatives.

Qualifications

Formal Education Required:

Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physical science, finance, or business.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, physical science, finance, or business.
  • 8+ years of direct experience in issues related to distributed energy resources and the changing electric utility industry, including managing the progress of multiple projects, having demonstrated strong organizational and budgeting skills.
  • Knowledge of distributed resource hardware and software products, industry trends and business use-cases, from both the utility and third-party perspective.
  • Ability to tactfully engage, motivate, and persuade senior-level cooperative and industry leaders, with proven business acumen and ability to evaluate and articulate project ROI to seasoned business leaders.
  • Ability to provide service excellence by building relationships, being resourceful, responsive, and respectful.
  • Ability to travel and report to the office when required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree.
  • Product development experience.

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal and extensive reading.
  • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
