 Job Title: Senior Thermofluids Simulation Engineer 

Salary/Grade: £52,380.00 £57,500.00 depending on experience 

Location: Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, UK

About IPSD

Job Summary 

The Computer-Aided-Engineering (CAE) Simulation team is part of the engineering team at IPSD-M (Industrial Power Systems Division – Medium Engines). The CAE Simulation team is comprised of Thermofluids (CFD), Structural (FEA) and Software teams, and is responsible for supporting the design, performance and mechanical development of advanced powertrains for Caterpillar and driving the technical direction in the early stages of new products through the use of simulation tools and methodologies, as well as the virtual validation of these early concepts. 

We are seeking a Senior Thermofluids Simulation Engineer to join the team to lead, deliver and develop simulation processes to help influence and enhance Caterpillar products of the future.

What You Will Do

  • Investigate and resolve engineering problems on engine and battery applications through the use of 1D & 3D fluids simulation tools 

  • Development and evolution of simulation processes to support future needs and to improve the effectiveness of the team 

  • Optimisation and automation of products and processes to increase simulation efficiency 

  • Ownership of simulation processes  

  • Collaboration with the team to share, learn and develop yours and the team’s knowledge 

  • Clear verbal and written communication of results to internal and external customers. 

 

What You Have

Required qualifications 

  • Accredited Bachelors/Masters degree in a relevant Engineering subject 

  • Working knowledge engines & batteries desirable  

Simulation experience: Knowledge of 1D & 3D thermofluids simulation methodologies; ability to use 1D & 3D tools 
Level Working Knowledge:  

  • High level of experience of using 3D tools (e.g. STAR-CCM+, ANSYS, Converge) in transient multiphase/phase change (e.g. SCR system development, port fuel injection) 

  • Experience of using 1D tools (e.g. GT-Suite) primarily in engine performance  

  • Follows and develops team standards, policies and processes 

  • Regularly peer reviews work with others to share learning and develop robust solutions 

  • Uses research techniques to identify solutions to problems autonomously 

  • Coaching and technical leadership to junior members of the team 

 

Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors. 
Level Working Knowledge:  

  • Effectively communicate ideas to others and interpret others ideas  

  • Write, present and peer review engineering reports 

 

Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems. 
Level Working Knowledge:  

  • Approaches a situation or problem by defining the problem or issue and determining its significance. 

  • Identifies many possible causes for a problem based on prior experience and current research. 

  • Makes a systematic comparison of two or more alternative solutions based on available data and experience. 

  • Continuous improvement mindset to explore new simulation techniques to enable future automation and efficiency gains in simulation workflow.  

 

Technical Excellence: Knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges. 
Level Working Knowledge:  

  • Provides effective technical solutions to routine functional challenges via sound technical competence 

  • Effectively performs the technical job aspects, continuously building knowledge and keeping up-to-date on simulation advancements 

  • Applies technical operating and project standards based on achieving excellence in simulation results 

  • Applies simulation processes to help resolve technical issues in engineering problems. 

  • Helps others solve technical problems or issues.
