THE ROLE
Reporting to the Director of Litigation, the Legal Counsel will be responsible for civil and commercial law mandates, as well as litigation matters. This includes managing litigation, overseeing litigious files handled by external counsel, risk management, and training internal teams to help minimize litigation.
WHAT YOU’LL DO

Manage litigation, including file preparation, support for court representation, and settlement negotiations.
Refer litigious matters to external counsel and ensure ongoing follow‑up.
Provide advice on insurance law matters and litigation risk management to help minimize disputes.
Maintain the litigation tracking system to produce reports on the source, volume, and financial risks related to the company’s litigation.
Assess case risk and develop risk‑management strategies.
Support reserve analysis carried out by the company’s finance teams.
Prepare and deliver legal opinions primarily in civil and commercial law.
Conduct research, analysis, and interpretation of legislative and regulatory frameworks applicable to identified issues.
Provide legal opinions and practical solutions to various business units.
Work in partnership with business units, particularly in identifying strategies and desired objectives when preparing files.
Develop solutions to legal issues raised by business unit employees and provide the necessary support to implement those solutions.
Ensure that the company’s regular activities are carried out in compliance with applicable laws, corporate policies, and sound governance and business practices.
Advise business units on ongoing legislative changes within the relevant sector.
Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge and competencies in areas of law related to the practice.
Perform all other related duties associated with the profession.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
We want you to join our team! Here's what we're looking for:
Education:
Bachelor's degree in law;
Member in good standing of the Quebec Bar;
Experience:
At least four (4) years of relevant experience in civil and commercial law or litigation, in a company or law firm;
Knowledge and skills:
Strong skills in negotiating and drafting various agreements;
Proven ability to work under pressure with minimal supervision and to manage several concurrent files within established deadlines;
Ability to analyze and synthesize, and to explain legal concepts in simple terms;
Ability to organize work and manage priorities;
Ability to work independently and as part of a team;
Ability to adapt to a constantly changing environment.
Language skills:
Bilingualism required (Advanced French and English) both spoken and written, as the person will be required to work and communicate regularly in English while performing the tasks outlined above. Specifically, the role requires collaboration with global teams.
