The Victim Advocate provides immediate and ongoing support to patients, visitors, and Cleveland Clinic employees who are victims of crime by delivering crisis intervention, emotional support, education, and referrals across medical and legal systems, while collaborating with internal and external partners and maintaining required documentation and reporting.

 This role requires flexibility to respond across multiple Cleveland Clinic locations and community settings and is a critical position within the Center for Workplace Violence Prevention and Caregiver Well-Being (CWPVP-CWB), which prioritizes caregiver safety by consolidating proactive prevention and reactive response efforts into a dedicated center that fosters collaboration, ensures efficient use of resources, provides structure and accountability across all hospitals, enhances prevention and response to workplace violence events, and supports caregivers in their recovery following such incidents.

A caregiver in this position works a hybrid schedule from 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Must have the ability to travel to multiple CCF locations.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

• Provide direct services to patients, visitors and employees within the Cleveland Clinic community who have experienced domestic violence, sexual assault, workplace violence, stalking, robbery, assault, harassment, etc., offering crisis intervention, emotional support and education. 
• Provide direct services in diverse settings and travel between Cleveland Clinic locations.
• Serve as liaison between victims and other agencies and complete assessment of victim needs and makes appropriate referrals to community organizations, state and national programs related to victim needs.
• Provide educational presentations to diverse populations on topics related to victim needs and trauma informed care, including to medical professionals and law enforcement.
• Maintains accurate documentation related to victims served as required by internal standards and/or grant funding. Compiles statistics and database to prepare monthly, quarterly and annual program reports and maintains client files.
• Participate in internal and external committees related to victim advocacy and collaborate with other professionals, including physicians, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare professionals.
• Must be able to confront and solve basic practical issues and problems. Must demonstrate psychological fitness commensurate with the requirement to interact with individuals in crisis, as well as to effectively manage stressful situations.
• Good oral, written and interpersonal communication skills required to support victims of crime in a trusting and empathetic manner.
• High degree of analytical ability to review incident reports, interpret and translate information for use in supporting victims throughout the criminal justice process.  High level of integrity required for handling sensitive/confidential data and resources.
• Knowledge of various software applications related to the operation of a PC (i.e., prior use of Word, Excel, databases).

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

• Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or a related field (criminal justice, behavioral sciences, etc.)
• Two years of experience in victim services, hospital settings, criminal justice, or law enforcement
• Experience providing victim advocate services to patients
• Ability to manage crisis situations and work with sensitive/confidential information
• Willingness and ability to travel locally between Cleveland Clinic locations
• National Advocacy Credentialing Program registration within 1 year of hire
• Demonstrate proficiency in applied mathematics & reading comprehension at minimum junior high level  

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include: 

• Licensed Social Worker or Counselor
• Prior experience presenting or providing education on trauma-informed care or victim advocacy topics

Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to sit, stand, walk, and communicate.  May occasionally be required to lift and or move objects. 
• Required to work in a confined, secure area in close proximity to patients, visitors and employees of the Cleveland Clinic. 
• Flexibility needed to respond to after-hours emergency calls. 
• Must be able to travel throughout northeast Ohio counties served by Cleveland Clinic.
