Job Summary:

In a career as a Medical Lab Scientist, you join us in providing life-changing care to patients from across the region. In this role, you will follow all laboratory procedures and policies, (quality control, precision, accuracy, and correlation studies, maintenance, and corrective actions, preparing and evaluation of reagents, media, and standards) to maximize efficiency and effectiveness of lab services.

Schedule: 12:00 PM-10:30 PM, Four days a week with an off day based on scheduling needs. Rotating weekends and holidays.

Location: West Hospital

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  • Records, prepares, performs, evaluates, and reports patient tests, including various chemistry, microscopic, microbiology, molecular (PCR), hematology, serology, coagulation and blood bank tests. Communicates with providers and other appropriate staff concerning procedure results and their interpretation.
  • Demonstrates advanced technical skill in the collection of blood samples and acts as a resource to clinic and hospital personnel. Can evaluate and accurately process samples upon receipt. Evaluates specimen integrity and correlates tests results to the clinical picture of each individual.
  • Responsible for the communication of test results to all clinical personnel that may be involved in care of the patient.
  • Collaborates with clinicians or nursing personnel to correlate clinic information with testing results. Consults with pathologists or his/her designee for guidance with unexpected results.
  • Operates, calibrates, conducts performance checks, and maintains clinical lab instruments and equipment. Troubleshoots and resolves or refers problems as needed; refers serious problems to supervisor.
  • Participates in the completion of statistical analysis or data collection activities as assigned. Validates normal ranges and performs statistical analysis.
  • Provides clinical orientation and supervision for new or less skilled laboratory personnel.
  • In the absence of the Director, Assistant Director, or Supervisor may provide general supervision.
  • Demonstrates and maintains competency in all designated areas.
  • Prepares quality control materials according to established protocol, analyzes material and evaluates results for acceptability. Utilizes appropriate knowledge to accurately investigate unacceptable results and perform appropriate troubleshooting techniques to resolve problems.
  • Assists with training of new employees and ongoing assessment of competence of laboratory, clinic or hospital personnel applicable to acquired technical expertise.
  • Participates in the investigation and/or development of new test procedures. May be requested to develop or update departmental procedures as appropriate.
  • Provides patient care and education according to the patient population served.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology or chemical, physical, biological sciences from an accredited college or university required.
  • Completion of one year of full-time laboratory experience or training in the specialty or sub-specialty in which the individual performs tests required.
  • Registered by the ASCP or equivalent required.
  • BLS certification required.
