Job Description Summary:

Seeking a highly self-motivated, hardworking postdoctoral candidate with lung biology experience to work in a laboratory at the University of Kansas Medical Center, focused studying the role of ion channels in innate defense in the lungs.  Depending on the interest of the applicant, this project could tilt either towards innate immunity in cystic fibrosis or ARDS, or in studying how the lung reacts to inhalation of e-cigarette vapor. This project will encompass both basic and translational research. Candidates with a strong background in biochemistry, immunology, or physiology or a related discipline and prior experience of working either with lung tissue or systemic immune cells will be preferred.

Research Overview: Design and conduct experiments and interpret data under the mentorship of the Principal Investigator (PI).

  • Work independently and collaboratively on research projects.
  • Perform in vitro studies with primary lung cell culture models.
  • Perform biochemical or imaging experiments pertaining to CF or e-cigarette exposure.
  • Use imaging, biochemical, proteomic, and microbiological techniques both in vitro and in vivo.
  • Assist with development of grant proposals and scientific manuscripts.
  • Maintain a current Laboratory Notebook, documenting all calculations, work, experiments, and other pertinent research information.

Expectations: The Postdoc will be expected to complete research projects under the guidance of the faculty mentor, record and interpret the results of their experiments in an (electronic) laboratory notebook, prepare publication-quality manuscripts (including figures and tables) and publish in peer-reviewed literature.

  • Read literature articles, develop new ideas, and assimilate the information into his/her project design/interpretation.
  • Dissemination of studies: Interact on a regular basis with their PI, faculty mentor and members of the laboratory to discuss experimental design and interpretation of results.
  • Present research aims and findings at department seminars and at local and national scientific meetings. Write and publish their results as first author in abstracts, manuscripts, and posters.

Compliance: Attend and maintain compliance on all orientation and training sessions designated by the University and the Department, understand and follow IACUC and biosafety protocols, and attend departmental seminars and regular lab meetings.

Required Qualifications

Education: Recent Ph.D. in physiology, immunology, or a related field.

Work Experience: 

  • Experience in cell culture, microscopy, and viral models such as RSV.
  • Experience with peptide biochemistry, viral pathogenesis, and imaging. 

Preferred Qualifications 

Work Experience:

  • A record of creativity and scientific productivity. 
  • Proficiency in imaging or biochemistry, working with lung tissues or immune cells.
  • Experience with microscopy, flow cytometry and/or mass spectrometry is desirable.
  • Must be willing to perform both primary cell culture and animal model studies.
  • Experience working with BSL 2 pathogens.

Compensation Statement:

The pay range listed for this position is determined by our compensation program using market data and salary benchmarking. A combination of factors is considered in making compensation decisions including, but not limited to, education, experience and training, qualifications relative to the requirements of the position, and funding. At the University of Kansas Medical Center, a reasonable estimate for the starting pay range will be the minimum to midpoint of the posted range, taking into account the combination of factors listed above.
