Position Summary
Position performs frontline care duties for patients in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) and Neurology under the direction of a physician; works under physician oversight as required by state regulation and functions within the scope of practice defined by the Nurse Practitioner’s specialty certification, Barnes-Jewish Hospital medical by-laws, and, where it exists, the collaborative practice agreement.
Job Description
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- In collaboration with attending Epileptologists, evaluate and manage patients admitted to the EMU for characterization of events, and pre-surgical and surgical work-ups at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
- Co-coverage of rehabilitation patients admitted for Neurology rehabilitation service.
- Work with the physician team for ongoing development of population-specific teaching tools for patients and families.
- Take active role in evaluating patients admitted to the EMU and Neurology rehabilitation service including history, physical and discharge, collecting, organizing and entering related documentation in the medical record.
- Monitor medical condition of patients, documenting and reporting changes as necessary to the EMU or Neurology team.
- Participate in team and family discussions related to patient status, progress, test results and/or care plans for patients.
- Attend Epilepsy surgery conference (Mondays, 2:30 PM) and Neuro rehab team meetings (Mondays and Thursdays at 1 PM).
- Maintain a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients/families in accordance with established clinic/hospital standards. Obtain and document medical history, perform age-appropriate general physical and neurological exams, assess patients’ conditions and develop individual care plans for patients assigned.
- Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards. Enhance professional growth and development through educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops.
- Attend all relevant educational seminars and conferences and assist with population-specific guideline development/updates as indicated. Initiate appropriate diagnostic studies. Develop individualized plan of care, in collaboration with other health team members as needed.
- Prescribe and regulate medications, evaluating appropriateness and effectiveness.
- Coordinate the care of select patient populations to ensure promotion of health and wellness through education of patients/families, coordination of services and placing referrals.
- Facilitate and document development of comprehensive, individualized discharge and follow-up plan, in collaboration with health care team and family. Keep patient/family involved in all aspects of patient management process. Monitor/ensure accuracy of patient medical records, maintain all required reports, records, and statistics. Dictate letters to referring physicians or for chart documentation as per division policies.
- Effectively demonstrate leadership qualities. Serve as a role model for professional communication and effective problem solving.
Required Qualifications
- Master of Science in Nursing with emphasis in the Nurse Practitioner program.
REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION
- Advanced Practical Nurse licensure or ability to successfully obtain licensure within three months of date of hire.
- Certain/additional certifications may be necessary based on area of specialty.
- Basic Life Support certification (Online Basic Life Support certifications, those without a skills assessment component, are not sufficient to meet the Basic Life Support requirements).

Salary Range
Base pay is commensurate with experience.
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
