Citi is seeking a highly motivated attorney to join its Legal Department as a Senior Lead Counsel I in the US Retail Bank Legal Team.  The US Retail Bank Legal Team is a trusted partner, providing legal counsel and support for Citi’s US Retail Bank and is part of the larger US Personal Banking Legal Group supporting consumer and small business credit and banking products and services. 

The role provides an opportunity to work directly with Citi’s Retail Bank product owners and functions to counsel on the development and support all aspects of consumer banking products and services.  

The Senior Lead Counsel I in US Retail Bank Legal is a senior level individual contributor position responsible for serving as a subject matter expert and key legal advisor to business stakeholders and functional partners, by providing legal advice, counsel and thought leadership on all aspects of legal matters relating the US Retail Bank products and services throughout their lifecycle.     

This role requires the ability to work collaboratively and to have a solid conceptual /practical grounding and understanding in the applicable U.S. banking laws and regulations. This role has authority to make independent decisions on issues and activities that have critical impact or influence on Citi overall. The role will require the attorney to develop strong relationships with clients and key contributors and to manage a diverse portfolio of legal issues.  This role does not have any direct reports.


Responsibilities:

  • This role will require a collaborative attorney capable of providing advice on the development, offering, and servicing of a variety of consumer products and services through diverse distribution channels including retail bank branches and digital. 
  • This role will provide practical legal advice and counsel to US Retail Bank Product leadership, and others on matters of significant importance and impact to the Consumer and Small Business Banking businesses, informed by deep subject matter expertise and significant industry experience including:
    • Interpreting current and proposed laws and regulations as applicable to all aspects of the product lifecycle, customer treatment, and disclosures.
    • Supporting company responses to government agency examinations and investigations, enforcement actions, and private complaints.
    • Developing a deep understanding of the Consumer and Small Business Banking Lines of Business, building strong collaborative relationships with business, Risk, Compliance, and other control partners
    • Aid with the detection and escalation of legal risk and support resolution through timely and thoughtful counsel.
    • Interpret rulings, laws and regulations impacting consumer financial products as part of the US Personal Bank Legal Group.
    • Draft and support consumer deposit products and disclosures with a focus on clarity, adherence to legal requirements and, importantly, the opportunity to be creative in delivering the best consumer experience in banking. 

Qualifications:

  • 7 years of relevant financial services industry experience, including experience in an in-house legal role or law firm
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, organizational, relationship management skills
  • Prior relevant work experience providing legal counsel on consumer financial services strongly preferred
  • Ability to apply sound judgement while managing complex subject matter and issues
  • Excellent written, verbal, presentation, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to handle multiple complex and confidential matters under time and pressure
  • Effective negotiation skills and ability to maintain effective relationships at executive levels
  • License to practice law in good standing

  • Juris Doctorate or equivalent law degree

$169,040.00 - $253,560.00
