Under administrative direction, coordinates the various transplant and Ventricular Assist Devices (VAD) activities to ensure quality patient care is delivered.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Maintains a current database of all resources, agencies, hospitals, etc. that provide transplant and VAD services. 
  • Educates the physicians, staff, patients, and families about the procedures, expectations and anticipated results involved in a transplant and VAD procedure. 
  • Coordinates the admission and discharge of patients; provides follow-up contact through the clinic. 
  • Assesses the patient’s readiness to undergo a VAD placement and subsequent heart transplant; assists with nursing care as needed.  
  • Responsible for accurately placing a potential transplant candidate on the National Transplant Wait List
  • Providing pertinent data into the UNET website which is maintained by the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN). This data is entered on pre and post-transplant patients and is required by the OPTN for all approved solid organ transplant centers.
  • This position requires working on an on call basis to provide 24/7/365 coverage for organ offers prior to transplant and VAD placement on an urgent, emergent basis.
  • Participates in research projects; implements research-based changes through the education of staff and physicians. 
  • Develops quality assurance indicators.  Serves as a preceptor to students and new unit employees.
  • Coordinates all activities to support a heart transplant once an organ offer is accepted including patient admission, activate OR transplant team, procurement team, jet charter transportation, ground transportation and patient recipient notification.
  • Coordinates all activities to support the placement of a Ventricular Assist Device under urgent and emergent conditions including notification of OR VAD team and perfusion team, procuring supplies, setting up the VAD equipment and programing the pump with alarms parameters. Trouble shooting the pump and observing for complications.
  • Participate in surveys by transplant regulatory agencies such as UNOS and CMS as the coordinator will be the main focus of the survey
  • Contribute to the development of written policies, protocols, and procedures specific to solid organ transplant and VAD placement as a subject matter expert.
  • Active participation in Quality Assurance Process Improvement activities relative to pediatric heart transplant and VAD placement.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Graduate from an accredited school of nursing required.  Bachelor of Science (or higher) in Nursing Board Approved Program preferred.

Experience: Two (2) years experience as a Registered Nurse in an acute care setting or in a transplant program required

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) RequiredCurrent RN License issued by the Oklahoma State Board of Nursing, or a current multistate compact RN License (eNLC).  Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association required upon hire.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities  

  • Knowledge of nursing theory, practices, techniques, procedures and standards. 
  • Skill in planning and organizing nursing care, applying advanced nursing clinical skills, maintaining records and charts, preparing written reports and maintaining effective working relationships with other.  
  • Knowledge of resources available in the community for transplant patients to access for follow-up care.  
  • Good computer skills. 
  • Good patient assessment skills.
