The opportunity: 

Markel International Wholesale, a division of Markel, has a strong presence in the Lloyd's market across London, Asia, and Australasia. We are seeking a Service Owner, Wholesale, to manage the performance and functionality of our application services.  

The ideal candidate will be a proactive leader with expertise in wholesale insurance applications and SQL server management, along with a proven track record in enterprise application oversight.  

 

What you’ll be doing:

Oversee the performance and availability of the wholesale application services portfolio, ensuring alignment with business requirements and service levels.  

Collaborate with senior stakeholders to align application functionality with organizational goals and user needs. Build strong relationships with vendors, negotiating contracts and managing outsourced services effectively.

Manage a team of IT professionals, fostering a culture of innovation and continuous improvement in line with Markel's values. Provide technical leadership, staying informed on emerging technologies that could impact performance. Monitor expenses to remain within budget, addressing variances as needed.  

Oversee the entire lifecycle of the wholesale application portfolio, including upgrades, maintenance, troubleshooting, and disaster recovery. Develop strategies to enhance application performance and user experience, collaborating with Markel engineering teams to adhere to best practices. In partnership with solutions architecture, create long-term plans and roadmaps for enhancements, while maintaining detailed service support documentation. 

 

Our must-haves: 

 

The successful candidate will have: 

Experience 

  • Proven experience managing wholesale application services within the insurance industry, and demonstrated ability to manage enterprise applications. 

  • Experience working with senior stakeholders, understanding their needs, and translating them into IT solutions. 

  • A track record of working collaboratively, demonstrating integrity, equality, mutual respect, and celebrating diversity. 

  • Experience of scripting development, ideally with hands-on experience in Microsoft SQL 

 

Qualifications 

  • Qualification or equivalent experience in Computer Science or information Systems 

  • Working knowledge of the ITIL service management lifecycle 

  • An understanding of the end to end project lifecycle 

  • Experience supporting key business applications within a financial systems business 

  • Experience working in a regulated industry, ideally SOX or Solvency II 

  • Experience of working in a business facing role using strong people skills and collaborative approach 

  • Strong planning and co-ordination skills proven in a complex and large scale technical environment

  • Proven analytical skills, and knowledge of analysis methodologies, tools and techniques 

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work well under pressure and maintain composure in challenging situations. 

  • Strong leadership skills with a focus on team development and achieving collective goals. 

  • A strategic thinker with excellent problem-solving abilities and a customer-centric approach. 

  • Committed to personal growth and development, open to feedback, and willing to embrace new challenges. 

  • Ability to lead and mentor a technical team, fostering a collaborative and innovative work culture.
