Senior Fiduciary Wealth Tax Liaison

Overview:

Supports resolution of complex tax technical client issues in support of the broader front office, while also supporting tax return and tax authority notice review within the tax liaison team. In conjunction with the tax liaison team, manages tax remediation and tax efficiency projects throughout the year.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a thorough understanding of the systems and procedures of the Fiduciary Tax area and participate in training within and outside the department to expand job-related knowledge.
  • Provide guidance and training to less experienced personnel.
  • Participate in client meetings and sales pitches.
  • Contribute to the overall management of the department.
  • Understand and support resolution of complex trust tax planning strategies/issues.
  • Support the review of a selected population of externally prepared tax returns to ensure appropriate oversight of external vendor preparation.
  • Support timely review and response to tax authority notices.
  • Support remediation and efficiency projects, such as GST review, state nexus analysis, charitable trust processing, payment workflows, etc.
  • Understand and adhere to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company’s Risk Appetite.  Design, implement, maintain and enhance internal controls to mitigate risk on an ongoing basis.  Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.
  • Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
  • Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
  • Complete other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 7 years’ experience preparing income tax returns, or in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 11 years’ higher education and/or work experience, including a minimum of 7 years’ experience preparing income tax returns
  • Minimum of 2 years’ managerial and/or work leadership experience
  • Good understanding of pertinent word processing and spreadsheet software
  • Good communication skills
  • Experience dealing with clients and advisors

Education and Experience Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance/Economics
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience preparing trust income tax returns
  • CPA (Certified Public Accountant)/MST/JD/LLM
  • Experience with pertinent tax-related systems and software
  • Experience preparing complex returns
  • M&T Bank is committed to fair, competitive, and market-informed pay for our employees. The pay range for this position is $115,703.73 - $192,839.55 Annual (USD). The successful candidate’s particular combination of knowledge, skills, and experience will inform their specific compensation.
