Job Summary
The sky is no longer the limit as Nidec takes its technology off the ground and into the Aerospace market. As a Mechanical Design Engineer with the Nidec Aerospace team, you will have the opportunity to apply and develop your expertise to design electric propulsion systems for the battery-powered aircrafts that will enable the world to sustainably and efficiently get from point A to point B.Job Description
Responsibilities include:
Develop advanced mechanical designs for electric propulsion inverters
Participate in proposal development as a mechanical packaging expert, steering the mechanical design, thermal, vibration, and other environmental design philosophy in the preferred direction and advising team members of the risks related to trade study choices.
Make design considerations for mass and topology optimization, structural integrity, thermal optimization, safety and cost
Analyze designs to ensure they meet or exceed requirements using finite element analysis, thermal analysis, airflow simulations, design for assembly, structural calculations, and failure mode analysis, etc.
Solve mechanical design challenges to improve system performance, based on metrics for: mass, efficiency, cost, durability, reliability, ease of assembly, safety, etc.
Prepare data items for projects including thermal, vibration, mechanical tolerance, and others
Create 3D models and 2D drawings for production solution requirements, Creo experience required.
Specify required tolerances and critical-to-quality features for components and assemblies.
Communicate proposed designs to functional groups outside Engineering, both within Nidec and without.
Work directly with external suppliers to optimize designs for tooled components
Participate in First Piece Article inspection/APQP/PPAP processes for newly specified components.
Participate in technical design reviews for newly developed solutions with cross functional teams
Perform these and other duties and responsibilities through self-initiative, leadership, and collaboration to achieve new product development goals.
Required Knowledge & Skills:
BS Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
5 or more years related work experience in packaging electronics or similar industry
Creo 3D CAD solid modeling skills in supporting new product designs required.
Experience designing die castings, machined parts, composites, and/or injection molded plastics.
Experience with GD&T and tolerance analysis.
Experience with structural FEA software, Ansys experience preferred.
Design for Manufacturability.
Ability to work independently or collaborate in cross functional team with electronic engineers.
Familiarity with basic electrical engineering principles, and the application and use of electrical connectors and other interconnect products.
Experience with electronics packaging and design that includes the use of Printed Wiring Board (PWB) and Circuit Card Assembly (CCA), Power MOSFET Modules and Capacitors.
Experience with shock and random vibration environmental stresses and their iteration to electronic boxes and PCBs.
Experience performing deflection and vibration analysis on printed circuit cards (PCB)
Effective written and oral communication skills.
Creative, ‘out-of-the-box’ thinking.
Ability to handle competing demands and support multiple, concurrent programs
Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience designing components for aerospace
Proficiency in ANSYS (Finite Element Analysis (FEA)
Familiarity with ANSYS ICEPAK (CFD / thermal analysis)
Familiarity with ANSYS Sherlock
Experience with solder fatigue analysis
