The Opportunity

The Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) is recruiting a Summer Student to join the fast-paced Orphaning and Insolvency team and support the management of Alberta’s energy liabilities. To thrive in this role, you are a strong collaborator who works well under pressure, adapts quickly in a dynamic environment, and enjoys tackling new challenges.

In this position, you will assist in delivering the AER’s orphaning and insolvency programs by working alongside regulatory professionals to promote, verify, and enforce compliance across the province. The role provides valuable insight into the operationalization of several of the AER’s liability management programs, helping ensure the AER’s mandate is upheld. Responsibilities include coordinating, analyzing, and continuously improving regulatory processes related to defunct and insolvent companies within the energy sector.

What your day-to-day will look like:

  •  Contribute to a regulatory continuous improvement project focused on identifying and addressing process gaps within the organization.

  • Support project work that may include analyzing current regulatory workflows, gathering stakeholder input, and recommending enhancements to improve efficiency, compliance, and overall outcomes.

  • Participate in activities such as data analysis, process mapping, and drafting proposals for improvement, collaborating with team members to ensure recommendations align with organizational priorities and regulatory requirements.

  • Engage in project-based work aligned with the activities and initiatives of the Orphaning & Insolvency team.

  • Collaborate with team members to support the activities outlined above, bringing a fresh perspective—your insights and suggestions will be welcomed and valued.

What we’re looking for in you:

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor’s program in Political Science, Criminology, Science, Business, Oil and Gas, or a related field.

  • Strong critical thinking skills, including the ability to anticipate second- and third-order effects.

  • Able to perform effectively under pressure and adapt to dynamic environments with evolving processes and regulations.

  • A quick learner with strong technical aptitude, comfortable exploring new systems and developing competency quickly.

  • An effective communicator with strong written and verbal communication skills.

Additional Information:

  • Proof of enrollment in a registered post-secondary institution including enrollment in the semester following the work term, or enrollment in a registered co-op program will be a condition of hire.

  • Please include a cover letter / portfolio as part of your application.

  • All applicants must be legally entitled to work in Canada at the time of application.

  • Should an individual with the required qualifications not be available, applicants with closely related qualifications may be considered. As a result, the position may be redesigned and/or reclassified.

  • If you need accommodation during any stage of the recruitment process, please email [email protected]. Information relating to the need for accommodation and accommodation measures will be addressed confidentially.

What we offer you:

  • Flexible Work Program - hybrid work and flexible hours.

  • Hybrid work - employees may work remotely up to five days per calendar month, with a limit of two remote days per week.

  • Student Cohort Groups - Join vibrant student cohorts for networking, collaboration, and support.

  • Engagement Activities - Participate in workshops, seminars, and social events to enhance your skills and personal growth.
