Description:

Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Sr. Principal Materials & Processes Engineer (M&P) specializing in metallic materials for airframe structures to join our team of diverse professionals supporting major defense programs located at Rancho Bernardo, CA.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Serve as the technical lead /stakeholder for the metallics functional area (e.g. reviews technical change requests for feasibility, risk, and impact; advises in the selection, qualification, application, and procurement of all parts, materials, and processes for the Program)

  • Recommend and support the selection, qualification, testing, and failure analysis of metallic materials and processes for military aircraft

  • Use independent advanced knowledge and ideas to guide the development and implementation of technical solutions to highly complex problems

  • Generate test plans and reports (e.g. Material and Processes Substantiating Data and Analysis Test Plans/Reports, Corrosion Control Plans)

  • Develop and analyze materials and their related fabrication and application processes for use in engineering design of structures, systems and subsystems

  • Work with design engineers in the selection and application of metallic materials systems (e.g. metallic mechanical parts, surface finishes and protective coatings, sealants, EEE components and supporting hardware)

  • Participate in anomaly resolution by supporting Material Review Board (MRB) and providing non-conformance and failure analysis assessments

  • Perform root cause analysis of material failures and provide effective solutions to production metallic issues

  • Review and approve engineering drawings

  • Participate in and lead technical discussions with Subcontractors and Customers as needed to support the resolution of complex material and processes challenges

  • Support Subcontractors with metallic part/material requirements interpretation and review of Subcontractor Data Requirements Lists (SDRLs)

  • Review and approve subcontractors' planning for compliance with Program’s materials and process requirements

  • Provide technical guidance to early-mid career materials and process engineers in support of skill/knowledge development within materials and process community

  • May travel to Subcontractor or Customer locations

Basic Qualifications for a Senior Principal Engineer:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline from an accredited university and 8 years of related experience OR a Master’s Degree with 6 years of related experience OR a PhD with 3 years of related experience

  • Related experience which includes developing and maintaining parts, materials and process specifications (e.g. in metallics, sealants and coatings, mechanical)

  • Ability to obtain a DOD Secret clearance within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company to meet its business needs (US citizenship is a pre-requisite)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution

  • Active DoD Secret clearance granted or renewed within the last 6 years or is enrolled in continuous evaluation

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment

  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and/or accomplishing them simultaneously

  • Ability to comprehend and analyze complex problems and develop solutions

  • Experience with military specs and standards

  • Experience interfacing with a military customer

Salary Range: $133,000.00 - $199,600.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
