Job Summary:

The Finance Operations Specialist is responsible for analyzing the financial and strategic performance of a $1.5 billion health system, including its network of hospitals and clinics. This role plays a key part in supporting data-driven decision-making by assessing the profitability of product lines and new service initiatives. The Specialist will conduct benchmarking of financial and clinical metrics against other UMMC health systems to identify opportunities for operational improvement, enhance cost efficiency, and contribute to long-term strategic planning.

Education & Experience

Education and Experience Required:

Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of experience in accounting or finance.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Strong analytical skills to identify financial and operational improvement opportunities through data analysis and interpretation. Proficiency in statistical methods, Excel, relational databases, and reporting tools such as Crystal Reports or Microsoft Reporting Services is required. Strong communication skills are essential, with the ability to present data clearly and educate various audiences. Experience with healthcare financial systems, cost accounting, budget analysis, and SMS ad hoc reporting is preferred. Knowledge of healthcare industry trends, along with solid project management and interpersonal skills, is also important.

Responsibilities

  • Support the budgeting process by collecting, organizing, and entering capital, operating, and personnel data into financial systems.
  • Collaborate with departments to validate budget submissions and ensure data accuracy.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of financial reports and forecasts.
  • Learn and assist in configuring and maintaining the Financial Planning/Reporting/Decision Support application.
  • Extract and compile data from systems such as Epic, Workday, and industry databases to support planning and analysis.
  • Reconcile data inputs between source systems and financial planning tools under the guidance of senior staff.
  • Prepare routine financial reports, dashboards, and analysis for review by senior analysts and managers.
  • Analyze basic financial trends and variances, escalating any anomalies to senior team members.
  • Participate in training and development activities to understand key financial systems, organizational drivers, and reporting tools.
  • Support ad hoc financial projects and data requests from leadership and other departments.
