What you need to know about the role-

We are seeking a smart and dynamic lawyer to join our legal team, supporting PayPal’s regulated entity in the UK. This role is suited to someone open to learning a variety of skills and is comfortable working on a range of regulatory matters, interacting with regulators, and building out operational excellence in line with FCA requirements. A successful candidate will also support a variety of corporate governance as PayPal scales up its regulated UK business. The role provides an excellent opportunity to work with PayPal UK’s Board and key stakeholder committees.



This position is based in London and will report to the Head of Legal for PayPal UK. Applicants should expect to advise on all aspects of regulatory matters for PayPal UK. They will also advise on regulatory change, including changes to PayPal's products and services, legal aspects of regulatory interactions both non-contentious and contentious, the design and modification of PayPal's products and services and PayPal’s online terms and conditions.

An ability to work in a matrixed environment with multiple international stakeholders is essential.



Meet our team-

It is an exciting opportunity to join a growing team! You will be part of PayPal’s global Legal function, working within a team of 8 legal staff who support PayPal’s UK entity. This team provides analysis of UK laws and regulations to other parts of the PayPal business, including other lawyers and key stakeholders across the business. The team also supports the entity’s engagement with regulators and its corporate functionality.

Your way to impact  

You’ll work regularly with senior entity and business leadership and partner with the business, Compliance, Government, and Regulatory Relations on matters. You will help guide the entity on legislative and regulatory change, support regulatory interaction, and play a key role in influencing the development of PayPal’s business in the UK. Your work may be as varied as reviewing PayPal’s latest marketing strategies, responding to relevant consultations, supporting product development, developing control frameworks, or working with our frontline customer service teams.  

  

Your day to day –  

 

In your day-to-day role, you will legally advise on: 

  • regulatory change, including changes to PayPal’s products and services to support compliance;  

  • legal aspects of regulatory interactions, including inspections;  

  • corporate governance and key aspects of operating an FCA supervised Electronic Money Institution with Part 4A permissions relating to Consumer Credit and MLR registration for the provision of crypto services; 

  • the design and modification of PayPal’s products and services; and  

  • PayPal’s online terms and conditions.   

  

What do you need to bring-      

  • Admitted as a solicitor in the UK or other common law jurisdiction, with meaningful experience in a law firm or as in-house counsel;  

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, changing environment and matrixed organization 

  • Prior experience in a regulated business, preferably in the context of a regulated, international e-money, payments, financial services, or fintech firm;  

  • An understanding of the UK’s regulatory framework and environment for Financial Services, including familiarity with relevant aspects of the FCA Handbook (including the SMCR regime); and  

  • A strong interest in working in fintech and innovation.
