Greenhouse Research Technician

The Greenhouse Research Technician will support creation, testing, selection, and advancement of alfalfa germplasm.  The role will help guide process improvement and establishment of standard operating procedures in terms of electronic record management, seed lab activities, field activities, greenhouse activities, and data usage.  The Associate Research Support will network across business units from manufacturing to sales and will be in a position to help set strategic direction for Land O’ Lakes alfalfa research and development. This position is part of the alfalfa product development team for Western alfalfa breeding and development.

  • Assist with greenhouse pollinations, pest and disease evaluations, trait purity evaluations, pest and disease screens, tissue sampling, cuttings and potting, AP testing, greenhouse maintenance planting, watering, fertilizing, insect control, etc., data collection and entry, forage quality sampling and processing, note taking, and forage and seed harvest fieldwork. Some microscope work will be needed.

  • Assist the Excellence Through Stewardship (ETS) quality lead for alfalfa in implementing program activities for managing transgenic material.

  • Lead continuous process improvement initiatives for all aspects of the breeding program.

  • Other key responsibilities include assisting in the seed room, pulling orders, shipping, and maintaining the seed database.

Required qualifications

  • Associates degree in related discipline with 1+ years of relevant work experience.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills. 

  • Ability to support and train others in execution of technical activities.

  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively as a member of a multi-disciplinary research team.

  • Ability to work independently and contribute to operational planning and business strategy.

  • Experience in data management and analysis.

  • Experience in Microsoft Office applications and database knowledge.

  • Ability to travel up to 10%, primarily within the PNW, but with some domestic travel at times.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience in greenhouse and small-plot field research.

  • Familiarity with using a commercial breeding software.

  • Bachelor of Science in Plant Breeding, Animal Breeding, Genetics, Agronomy, Horticulture, or related field with 0-2 years of relevant work experience. 

  • Valid Drivers License, with a good driving record, or ability to obtain one. 

First Shift

  • Mon-Friday with occasional weekend work.

The salary range for this role is $59,840 - $89,760
