Outpatient Clerks/Technicians aid in the delivery of patient care, perform various clerical activities and assist with patient processing. Caregivers in this role are known for their ability to anticipate and meet the needs of patients and visitors coming to Akron General.  
 

A caregiver in this position works 7:00AM – 5:00PM.  


A caregiver who excels in this role will:  

  • Perform routine clerk duties such as assisting with registering patients, addressing patient concerns and coordinating the daily appointment schedule. 

  • Collect information from patients, process insurance claims and audit collections. 

  • Receive incoming calls to the department and assist or direct callers to the appropriate personnel.  

  • Handle phone calls to and from physician's offices and departments regarding patient information. 

  • Receive and/or collect a variety of biological specimens, including verification of demographics and test information, identification of samples requested and specimen type. 

  • Obtain completed lab, x-ray, EKG and H&P information under the correct patient account number and place in patient chart. 

  • Obtain blood specimens by various venipuncture and micro collection techniques. 

  • Perform vital signs, EKGs and patient preparation. 

  • Transmit, complete order entry and obtain EKG tracings.  

  • Initiate and prepare patient charges or credits through the hospital information system. 

  • Ensure effective, efficient, and timely patient flow by adequate patient chart completion, maintain accurate cross reference files for patient orders, and fax test results to physician offices. 

  • Prepare and complete charts with accuracy. 

  • Maintain statistical records regarding number of patients seen daily. 

  • Ensure signing and completion of necessary registration and clinical forms and obtain face sheets and charge plates (as applicable) when updating patients' charts. 

  • Enter laboratory and radiology orders when registering patients and assist with patient scheduling. 


Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:  

  • High school graduate OR the equivalent including courses in typing CRT, data entry, business, mathematics and office procedures.  

  • Two years of medical/technical assisting experience OR graduate of a medical assistant program.  

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.  

  • Computer experience.  

  • Passing score on an alphanumeric data entry test.
