General Description:

Under general supervision of the Administrative Director and Physicians, technologists perform professional mammography on a daily basis utilizing approved policies and procedures.  Technologists perform pre-examination tasks in accordance with approved protocols from Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO); complete and ensure accuracy of all data entry and record keeping; complete and maintain all assigned quality assurance, responsibilities in accordance with American College of Radiology and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) standards.  All technologists will perform other tasks and services associated with Breast Imaging of Oklahoma.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Position patients according to standards set by American College of Radiology (ACR)
  • Consistently select appropriate technical factors from technique charges and operate equipment in accordance with prescribed radiation safety practices
  • Print films and monitor printing equipment according to BIO policy
  • Prepare completed mammograms for interpretation in a timely manner, including appropriately identified images and all associated forms and paperwork
  • Perform Breast Self-Examination (BSE) as needed; ensuring proper markers are placed to communicate areas of concern to radiologist
  • Actively educate patients on BSE, breast cancer, and other related women’s health issues
  • Assist radiologist in all technical procedures such as:  digital stereotactic suros core biopsy, ultrasound guided core biopsy/cyst aspiration, pre-op needle locations, galactography, MRI, or other interventional procedures
  • Reviews all requisitions/orders for accuracy and applicable clinical information
  • Ensures all information on the Breast History Form is accurate and complete
  • Prepares examination room and all equipment in advance according the patient’s examination and diagnostic needs
  • Confirm that all mammography files include appropriate labels and ID markers as required by ACR/FDA
  • Inputs all data into the information system required for exam completion
  • Complete and update all radiographic image records and anatomical inserts according to BIO policy
  • Perform daily printer checks, record results, and report any abnormalities to the appropriate supervisor
  • Perform weekly phantom checks and appropriately reports discrepancies
  • Perform equipment monitoring and cleaning to maintain the highest quality environment
  • Helps maintain patient logs and information collection as required for regulatory standards
  • Performs weekly, monthly, quarterly, and semi-annual QA tests as required
  • Records inventory needs, as needed to maintain appropriate supply levels
  • Restocks exam rooms with linen and supplies
  • Properly disposes of soiled linen, trash, and hazardous waste
  • Assists clerical, billing, and scheduling staff as necessary

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: None required

Experience: None required.

License(s)/Certification(s)/Registration(s) Required: Registration from the American Registry of Radiological Technology (ARRT). Advanced Certification in Mammography Preferred. Current Basic Life Support issued by the American Heart Association preferred. Must meet applicant eligibility requirements and published standards for ARDMS, ARRT, or CCI in the cardiovascular, radiologic, or Mammography technology specialty required by the hiring department within 12 months of hire date.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:  

  • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, patient care procedures, principles of imaging, medical terminology, positioning of patients, medical ethics, radiobiology, and pathology required; demonstrated knowledge of the changes associated with aging.
  • Must be able to work as part of a team and follow instructions
  • Ability to be sensitive to patients’ physical and psychological needs.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records and work accurately with names, numbers, and codes.
  • Ability to draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
  • Ability to exercise discretion in handling confidential information and exercise sound judgment.
  • Must be able to multi-task and remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Must possess ability to understand various Breast Imaging of Oklahoma operations, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to work and communicate with staff, patients and their families, and meet their needs in a professional, polite, courteous, compassionate, and cooperative manner.
  • Must display a high level of initiative, effort and commitment towards completing assignments efficiently.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and demonstrate attention to detail.
