GENERAL PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:

This student peer tutoring position, is focused primarily on assisting students with their course work in School of Technology courses. This position will work in-person within the Ivy Tech Indianapolis Math & Science Resource Center, and will provide one-on-one tutoring support face-to-face and virtually via Zoom, and occasionally, group or workshop-style tutoring out of the Indianapolis Library space. Secondary responsibilities include maintaining a safe, friendly and positive environment for students to learn in, as well as tracking outcomes of sessions with students for reporting purposes.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Providing direct tutoring assistance in-person and virtually to students in college-level School of Information Technology courses.

    • Be willing to go beyond the easy or surface answers to questions to help students get to the root of the problem, question or issue they are having.

    • Move efficiently between students in a busy lab environment to ensure equal opportunities for assistance.

    • Hours of operation are Monday-Thursday 9am-7pm, Friday 9am-4:30pm, and Saturday 10am-4pm. May be scheduled up to 20 hours per week, with flexibility around students’ class schedules.

  • Keep accurate record of student tutoring sessions and interactions for data tracking purposes.

  • Maintain a clean, friendly and inclusive environment conducive to education.

    • Demonstrate strong customer service and/or student advocacy through a positive attitude of approachability, adaptability, strong problem-solving, collaboration, and desire to identify and support student success.

    • Engage in behaviors that create an inclusive environment in which all people are valued, supported, and empowered to succeed.

  • Complete required tutor-training modules to foster and implement high-quality best tutoring practices.

All responsibilities will be conducted within the parameters of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), other applicable regulatory requirements, and professional standards.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be eligible to work in the United States.

  • Currently enrolled in at least 6 credit hours in the School of IT at Ivy Tech Indianapolis. Preference given to students who plan to be enrolled for at least the next two consecutive semesters.

  • Successfully completed college coursework in Ivy Tech School of IT is required.  Must have received a final grade of “A” in the courses to be tutored.

    • Must be able to tutor School of IT courses with a focus on first semester courses (i.e. INFM 109, SDEV 120, SDEV 140, DBMS 110, ITSP 132, ITSP 134, NETI 104, NETI 109, CSIA 105, CSCI 101).  Successful completion of upper division School of IT courses preferred. 

  • The applicant is required to obtain a faculty recommendation for this position. Applicants may give the referral form to the faculty member, but the recommendation must be sent directly from the faculty member to Dean Benner at [email protected] either in electronic or hard copy form.

  • Strong communication and customer service skills.

  • Must have basic computer operation and troubleshooting skills.  Experience with virtual instruction or learning via Zoom preferred.

  • Experience in tutoring and/or teaching at the secondary and/or post-secondary level preferred.

STARTING SALARY RANGE: $15 / hour
