What You Will Do

Under minimal supervision, you will serve as a senior, hands‑on Building Automation and Commercial HVAC expert responsible for delivering high‑quality work across both service and construction project environments.

You will commission, troubleshoot, program, and optimize BAS and HVAC systems, ensuring proper integration, system functionality, and customer satisfaction. This role combines expert technical field service, construction/installation leadership, and mentorship of junior technicians.

You will interface directly with customers, general contractors, project managers, and internal teams to ensure projects are installed per scope, executed safely, and turned over cleanly—with accurate documentation and system performance that meets design intent.

How You Will Do It

BAS / Controls – Construction & Project Execution

  • Lead field installation activities for BAS projects, including device installation oversight, panel mounting, controller placement, and network topology verification.
  • Perform point-to-point checkouts, sensor/actuator calibration, and validation of wiring, terminations, and device addressing.
  • Load and configure controllers; implement sequence logic adjustments within the approved scope.
  • Lead functional performance testing, startup, and commissioning; verify sequences of operation and resolve construction-related issues in real time.
  • Coordinate with electricians, mechanical contractors, and other trades to resolve conflicts, sequencing issues, or field discrepancies.
  • Provide redlines, markups, and as-built corrections for engineering and closeout packages.
  • Support project managers with material tracking, submittal reviews, equipment schedules, and coordination meetings.

Technical Service & Troubleshooting (Senior/Expert Level)

  • Diagnose complex mechanical, electrical, and control failures across commercial HVAC equipment that are related to or that impact or are impacted by BAS controls (RTUs, AHUs, chillers, boilers, VAVs, hydronics, etc.).
  • Perform advanced BAS and HVAC system troubleshooting using trend data, metering, diagnostics, and sequence validation.
  • Execute preventive maintenance, corrective repairs, and optimization with high first-time-fix expectations.
  • Provide solutions for retrofit/upgrade opportunities uncovered during service visits.

Programming, Commissioning & Integration (Service + Projects)

  • Modify, test, and validate BAS software, logic blocks, scheduling, alarming, and graphics (within platform permissions and internal guidelines).
  • Support both retrofits and construction projects through startup, commissioning, and customer turnover.
  • Resolve networking and communication issues (BACnet, MS/TP, IP-based systems, proprietary integrations).
  • Support commissioning activities: controller loading, checkout, functional performance testing, and issue resolution with other trades.

Customer Consultation & Scope Support

  • Provide field-driven recommendations for system improvements, retrofits, and energy-saving strategies.
  • Communicate clearly with customers, GCs, and project stakeholders regarding system status, issues, and corrective actions.
  • Support sales and PM teams with site assessments, scope clarifications, and technical write-ups.
  • Communicate clearly upon arrival and before departure; set expectations, explain findings, and document recommendations in a customer-friendly way.

Leadership, Training & Crew Coordination

  • Serve as the senior technical escalation point for BAS, HVAC, and integration challenges.
  • Mentor controls installers, service techs, and mechanical techs in troubleshooting methodology, safety, and professional work practices.
  • Lead small installation or commissioning crews as required, ensuring safety, quality, and production standards are met.

Documentation & Closeout Responsibilities

  • Complete accurate service tickets, commissioning forms, punch lists, as-builts, and turnover documents.
  • Assist PMs with closeout packages, O&M documentation, and customer training.
  • Properly complete all service/project documentation (job notes, work orders, as-builts, training forms, punch lists, certificates of completion).
  • Provide sketches/field change details for engineering corrections and drawing updates.
  • Assist with job layouts, submittals, equipment schedules, material ordering/tracking, and factory-mount coordination as needed.

Safety Expectations (Non-Negotiable)

  • Lead by example in all safety requirements: LOTO, PPE, fall protection, confined space, and electrical safety.
  • Conduct onsite safety leadership when supervising subcontractors or other technicians.

Continuous Development

  • Maintain expert proficiency through ongoing training: BAS platforms, HVAC systems, networking, and code compliance.

What We Look For

Required (Senior/Lead BAS + HVAC Experience)

  • 8–10+ years of commercial HVAC/BAS experience across service and/or construction projects.
  • Strong ability to read HVAC/BAS schematics, control drawings, sequences, risers, and submittals.
  • Proven experience with BAS commissioning, device checkout, controller configuration, and integrations.
  • Strong customer communication and documentation skills; ability to lead work independently.

Preferred

BAS platform training/certifications (Metasys/FX/Tridium/Alerton/Siemens/etc.).

  • Experience leading BAS installation crews, commissioning teams, or service technicians.
  • Experience with large-tonnage equipment, hydronic systems, VFDs, and airflow diagnostics.
  • Strong project experience: retrofits, renovations, sequence validation, and system optimization.

Physical & Work Environment

  • Ability to work in mechanical rooms, rooftops, and tight-access spaces; lift/move tools and material.
  • May require after-hours work depending on project schedules or customer needs.
